Wearable Wednesday: Detailing the Red Carpet

Feb25

Last week we introduced you guys to Lien Ta who shared with us some of her thoughts on what we should anticipate for the Oscar's Red Carpet. If you missed it, you can click here to see what she had to say! This week, she had some comments on what she saw. Regardless of what I may agree or disagree on in terms of the looks that made their appearance, I love hearing the opinions and being introduced to new designers or maybe getting an idea of what you think you could do at a later time or how your can modify it for yourself! Along with the gallery of images that I have included to go along with Lien's comments, I have included my own as I would love to weigh in as well. I love it so without any more delay, enjoy Lien Ta's comments in their entirety!

We saw a lot of white and beige, a lot of big, bold jewelry, a couple of curious belts, plenty of offensive mermaid tails and bows and a couple of one-shoulder straps that should’ve worked but didn’t.

In spite of the burst of color we’ve seen this awards season, there’s something about the Oscars that always urges the actresses to wear clean, glamorous white, metals and variants thereof – which, let’s be honest, is way better than a sea of black gowns (that’s what usually happens).

Penelope Cruz looked more than ready to accept her first Oscar in a big, rose-beige 60-year-old ball gown. Of everyone, she looked the most classic, soft and elegant. The others went ultra-modern: Marisa Tomei had the most unbelievable pleating on her Versace train; Heidi Klum’s gown was like giant red origami, and Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Aniston, Tina Fey and every other woman that wore sequins looked incredibly crisp, chic and youthful.

Some actresses, however, overdid it. Jessica Biel’s big, floundering bow seemingly gave her a third boob. Miley Cyrus’ Cinderella ballgown looked like a grade-schooler’s first encounter with glitter, forced to make something resembling a turkey (Happy Thanksgiving!). Despite loving Marisa Tomei’s train, her one-shoulder strap was shaped way too awkwardly – just like Kate Winslet’s split-personality dress. Reese Witherspoon had a similar disorder, but hers was multiple personalities – what were those black pigtails draped over her dress? Lastly, mermaid tails? When are they ever flattering? Repeat offender Beyonce Knowles doesn’t understand this, nor did Vanessa Hudgens and Melissa George.

Taraji P. Henson’s necklace was my favorite “big jewelry” of the night. The belts on Sarah Jessica Parker and Marion Cotillard’s Dior gowns were OK; I will admit that Marion’s gown was the only one that made me smile. She had peekaboo legs!

What have we learned? Everybody looks beautiful in white, cream, silver, et al. White T-shirts, come out and play! Plus, big colored baubles and fun belts will help bring an everyday look to the next level.
