Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ Road Trippin'

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we jumped on a horse and went happy trailing. Today, Keren shows us that a little road trip is all we need to continue to reconnect.

We all live in different locales. Different speeds. We do different things.

Have a different purpose.

Different lives.

But no matter what kind of life we live, it needs to be balanced.

The ‘balancing cocktail’ required to reach that equilibrium is different for each of us.

For some, a trip to a big city like NY or Tokyo may be what they need.

For this full time working urban mom, the prescription for ‘road to equilibrium’ sounds more like….

Take an all American road trip through California Coast with a great friend and call me in the morning!

A bit of a travel snob, I don’t normally embark on road trips as my choice of vacation. Usually, I fly (direct) to my destination and have researched and received recommendations on what to do, see, experience, buy, eat, sleep before I even step foot on the plane. I don’t miss a beat. Or do I?

There is something about road trips that gives you a sense of care-free exploration. Of appreciating the journey not just the destination. Of really traveling.

I can recall that feeling when I road tripped through the West Coast with my best friend and her family as a teen.

It was now time to reignite that engine.

I have been blessed with meeting and having so many amazing people in my life.

And thanks to eM, FB, t, SMS, MMS, BB, LinkedIn, etc. I get to keep in touch in lieu of my busy lifestyle. But, a very important part of ‘the balanced life’ (and remaining true to myself), is spending quality in-person time with my family & friends.

The next few days, was going to be about the benefits of friendship. And roadship.

We knew overall where we were heading but drove where the wind took us.

Have a plan and go with the flow.

A motto I swear by.

If you want to get somewhere in life (or in a given day) you need to have a plan. An intention.
But, it’s the plans that move with the current that survive and thrive daily tides and storms.

You need to Surf. Cruise. And breathe through life’s changes all while remembering to still have fun. Life is colorful. Not just black and white lists of to do’s.

The coastal fresh air. The amazing landscapes. The speed. The maps. The music. The picture pull-overs. The lavender farm pit stops. The conversation. The shared quiet. The freedom. The nostalgia.

The fun.

Who knew I would actually [still] be driving on a Journey through Myself?!

At one point, driving on the road with great music along the stunning backdrop of hilly landscape, it felt like we were in one of those car commercials. Turns out. ‘We were’.

We have reached San Luis Obispo County which is known to be the location for filming many of our national car commercials.

Considered one of the best stops for ‘Pure California’ between San Francisco and L.A., San Louis Obispo (SLO) was a perfect way to stray off course. And with the vineyards a few miles away the weather was grape perfect. The locals refer to it as SLO (to imply the ‘slow alternative to the hectic life’). It's a ‘natural escape where slowing down to enjoy the good life is the essence’. One might say I didn't stray off course, I was finally on the right course.

Surrounded by rolling hills as if suspended in the middle of nowhere was the historic mission town of SLO. A small almost European village-like town. Quaint. Vibrant and colorful. Relaxed and laid back. Energized. Playful. Almost caracature’ish. Definitely surreal. Happy.

This travel pit stop, I did not research in advance. I was going to explore on my own. Enjoy in a different way. Raw.

I walked the pristine streets and found myself in a shopping heaven. Adorable high-end boutiques and antique shops that were charming and unpretentious. (I later found out Lucky Magazine calls SLO it “Sprinkled with charmingly unpretentious shops”. Right on Lucky! )

Excellent places to dine, go wine tasting, grab cocktails, coffee or frozen yogurt. Many of them boasting local wine, cheese, produce, olive oil, fish. It was fresh and colorful and healthy and delish. It is no wonder the first Jamba Juice location began in SLO. They aren’t slow at all in knowing what is good for you.

After stumbling upon the colorful, quirky & famed Bubble Gum Alley and taking a trip back in time at Powell’s Sweet Shop, I felt like a kid seeing Willy Wonka ’s factory for the first time. The vintage candy. The sweet smell. The colors. The excitement. “What we really offer are memories. We want to walk our customers down memory lane and remind them of good things and good times.” Mr. Powell wanted me to find that core childlike happiness.

A killer song by The Police lead this 80’s child into a small café. In the back, I discovered a beautiful outdoor garden. Full of color. Crisp. Picture perfect.

I sat sipping my tea and with a journal in hand.

I was in the moment living the SLO life. I was in a happy place.

Now this is road trippin.

Start your engines.

Trendy Thursdays ~ Project Detox: Happy Trailing

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we embraced our inner ink. Today, Keren shows us a life in paradox in the hills of L.A..

Balance.

As a true Libran, it is what sits at the core of my being. And as an urban full time working mom it is something I stru[j]uggle to maintain.

This Air sign has been knocked off the balance beam by Fire one too many times and was calling in her troops.
In the arid Sanoran desert, I ‘detoxed’ the stresses & toxins from my busy lifestyle. Unclogged the areas within Me that needed attention. Reconnected.

Completely cleansed, rejuvenated, relaxed, mindful, and open, it was now time for me to re-visit a [new] terrain and get energized. Create movement. Re-awaken.

Experience: Air. Water. Earth. (& Fun!).

Get inspired.

Once I put it out there and my intention was set, the Las Angeles Magazine Issue (shown above amongst pictures from my hikes on the coast of the PCH) seemed to fall into my lap.

There it was!

My next step in this Journey.

I had to be the woman on the cover.

And, remember, I have a producer / leading actress credit in my own movie [titled Horse Power], and a new Inner Ink tattoo, so I am Hollywood.

With my L.A. Magazine in hand, I set out for the hills of California.

I have learned in Arizona that through the lenses things/people/places/issues can look different depending on the day, lighting, etc. Although I have been to L.A. many times, I am now here for a different purpose. I am in a different light.

The Editor of L.A. Magazine in her ‘Walkabout’ article captured how balanced L.A. is. A paradox of living. Even though it is known to be one of the most densely populated (2nd to yours truly) metropolitan area in the U.S., where blackberry’s & bumper-to-bumper traffic is the norm, it also harbors more wilderness than any other metropolitan area in the country. Allowing for mini-escapes and outdoor places to exercise and reconnect with nature. With yourself.

With great weather and ecology, ‘L.A. life outdoors’ is embedded into their daily lives. It is part of their culture. Their DNA. When you are in L.A. you see it clearly, but if you have not been, think Sex and the City/Gossip Girl verse Entourage/90210.

There are so many hikes with different terrains & difficulty level. Secluded and full of nature to asphalt pathways that are pet, stroller and bike friendly. Views of the city, ocean, wilderness, desert, hills, trees, cacti and/or stunning homes.

I hiked through many of these trails. Some were a serious workout. Some were seriously moving and memorable.

The biggest takeaway from hiking through L.A. was the inspiration it gave me for living a balanced, relaxed and healthy life.

As a mom, I was mostly inspired by a friend I met on the trail at Runyon Canyon in Hollywood. The wife of a famed producer, and mom of four, she is quite busy. Hiking with all of her kids (which they do daily!) is their time to connect. Ironically, they were relocating to NY for a film and although were excited for the increase in culture (and all the other fabulous reason we <3 NY) they were struggling with the idea of how to continue to live the healthy-outdoor-balanced lifestyle as a family.

The hike that was most memorable (& fun) was the one where I got to be that hiker in the L.A. Magazine cover. It all began with surfing at Malibu beach. The breeze and fresh air from the ocean. We then began a light hike from Westward beach (coast of Zuma beach). Enjoying the sweeping views of the coast atop Point Dume. We then decent to the beach and after enjoying quiet moments listening to the waves crash against the rocks, we jog the stretch of beach to the Paradise Cove restaurant for lunch and cocktails with friends. Yum.

Looking around me. We were not the only ones. This was the norm for couples, athletes, teens, and families alike. This was the L.A. paradox. And I loved it.

From dusk till dawn. I was happy trailing.

We don't always have a lot of items for children on here but when we do, you know it's big (or that we have the Holiday Gift Guide!). As I sat in the theater watching previews prior to Michael Jackson's 'This is It', I was reminded that Disney's Princess and the Frog is coming out soon! I love Disney cartoons and am very fond of the princess series. A few months ago, I read in WWD that Carol's Daughter had received the license for a line of hair care products! Trendy Thursdays ~ Kitten Lounge Supports SWAC & Purple Lab NYC

Who wouldn't love an afternoon of tea and mingling with other people in their industry? I knew that it would be a fun event and yet one that would require me to continue thinking about everything that took place. As you guys may remember from my last event at Purple Lab NYC, even with a few days in between the event and when I wrote about it on the site - I was still in awe. As I headed to the Norwood Club, a members only Country Club whose requirement is that you must be affiliated with the arts, I was struck with how much you can go the same place and not realize that there is more to what you see and what you know. I was a little shocked that this area of 14th street housed this awesome oasis! The memory of the gorgeous townhouse, the art, dining rooms etc is still in my mind and of course I want to be a member. Although the backdrop of the event was fabulous, I was there for something more.

Of course the tea kicked off with the Creatrix of Purple Lab NYC, Karen Robinovitz welcomed us and introduced an amazing line up of women! We learned about Triple Negative Breast Cancer and how it affected Nancy and her friends, moms who came together for playdates, put their resources and concern together to beseech the medical community to share notes on this disease in order to save women who were affected. Although Nancy passed away, I was encouraged that these women continue to fight and make their voices heard so that other woman can benefit. Nancy's favorite color was pink and to see her gorgeous daughter who was 7 wearing the cutest little prep school outfit with her pink nails, was inspiring.

From learning about the foundation and its impact, we saw a clip of "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy". I remember seeing this movie on Lifetime a few years ago but had never read the book. As the clip came to an end I literally (and those who know I'm obsessed with Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor will understand) looked over and saw a modern version of Elizabeth Taylor. With a simple classic dress, stunning earrings she was flawless and yes Geralyn Lucas was the author who wrote about her choice to wear red lipstick. I was so struck by her courage, frank nature and good sense of humor. I love the fact that she read from the book and also talked to us as well. Being able to be toured around Norwood was also amazing and gave me an opportunity to chat with her and to get a sense of who she was as a person.

It's difficult to convey all the moments that took place from being able to reconnect with my fellow bloggers, finally meet others that I have enjoyed reading for years and of course, to see everyone getting excited about the cookies that were included within the gift bag by none other than Crystal Horton of Tasty Morsels Bakery. As we all looked through our goodie bag, we all received Purple Lab NYC's SWAC (Sealed With a Cure) gloss in Nancy. Not only is it a gorgeous shade of pink with little specks of shimmer in it but it has all the elements that are perfect to keep your lips moisturized, there's a refreshing vanilla flavour - you feel like you can't put it on enough! In addition a percentage of the sales of this product go towards the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition, we received a little card that gave us a challenge. As you'll learn in my video, Geralyn (check out her site to learn more about the book, movie, The Lipstick Train, The Booby Mafia and so much more) had a theory about red lipstick and my challenge was "Be and look fabulous while vacuuming". As is very typical I tweaked my challenge and shared some additional thoughts (yes I'm obsessed with my lounge wear as much as I am with my daywear! To answer your questions, I'm wearing Daddy's Favorite an amazing line that I found out about while in Vegas at the Curve Show!). Enjoy the video!

Last week, we realized stopped and truly enjoyed the power of the perfect bite! Today, Keren shows us why we need to horse around.

Extra sun block with a side of cowboy boots!

After roll call, we were released into the expert hands of Wyatt Web, the legendary bestselling-author-creator-and-director-Equine Programs-and-resident-human-therapist at Miraval. One look at him and I had this dizzying sensation that we were in for more than just a horse ride.

Although the ranch was a short drive from the resort grounds it felt like we were secluded from the world. There was no traffic, the desert scenery was vast and organic, and the most man-made action consisted of abandoned-looking desert mailboxes (pictured above).

As with Swing & Prayer, we first sat in a circle and, guided by Wyatt, introduced ourselves, shared why we signed up for this activity, & what we were expecting.

What a scene!! I recall literally needing to step outside myself to view what was happening and take a mental picture. The large rustic wood chairs in circular formation. The wise-looking ‘cowboy’ sitting back, oozing inner peace and speaking to us as if he knows something we have yet to know. The magnificent backdrop of raw desert surrounded by the Catalina Mountains. The midday desert heat beating on us. The scent & sound of the Sanoran desert.

The harmony.

This was a scene from a Western flick. And I had a starring role.

The Good, the Bad and the [ultra chic]

Wyatt’s instructions: Go out in groups of two and groom the horse.

Eyeing each other’s reactions like in the Brady Bunch theme song we were all thinking the same thing.… shouldn’t I, on my spa vacation, be getting the pedicure and hairstyle - not the horse?! Before we could finish our thoughts, as clearly Wyatt knew what we were thinking, he proceeds to say…”this is not about the horse, it is about you”!

Horses (like babies) are very intuitive. Mindful. They have a supernatural ability to respond instantly to whatever they experience in the moment. This includes what you may be feeling, thinking or even planning to do next.

They have a Horse Sense.

This sense forces us to be honest with ourselves when working with the horse. To use our instincts. Our emotional energy.

When in this raw state we can learn a lot about who we are and how we are perceived by others. How effective we are in communicating, relationships, tasks, etc.

Like a mirror into ourselves.

The trick Wyatt says is to go in with clear Intention. “Your body is your oracle” Stay focused on your present task. Follow-through. If you do not succeed in getting the hoof up. Try again using a different method. If you still cannot do it. Ask for help.

And with that we go out into the corral. Grooming buckets and curiosities at hand. For 15 minutes I struggle with that horse. I do exactly what I thought Wyatt said to do. I walk up to the horse and I focus on my intention.

The horse does not budge.

I step back and try again & again using different methods. I attempt to force the leg up (as if they don’t measure strength in Horse Power!!). I pet the horse (what a stunning horse). I focus from my mothering skills onto this adorable creature “c’mon sweet thing, I am doing this for your sake! You need to have a clean hoof! Just lift up for me. Just try to enjoy your pedicure. It’s for your own good. now…Lift!.”

Then, like a cross between simple matter-of-fact and a bit of scolding Wyatt says to me “Would you stop taking care of everyone else and focus on yourself. (Isn’t this why I am even on a Project Detox?!) This is for you! It is not for the horse’s sake. You have a task to finish and he is not assisting.

Intention. Focus. Follow-through.”

(This rancher was not horsin’ around!)

I go back in and this time the horse begins to bring up his hoof to my hand before I even touch him. As if he senses my next move. Like we were connected. Like I was a magician. The Oracle.

This was my Aha moment.

Looking around at my “Brady Bunch family’, I spot a few more I-just-had-an-Aha-moment faces & I instantly learn the deeper meaning behind ‘Horse Power’.

The next tasks from point of self discovery and on were not only simple but empowering. We each got a turn to walk the horse and then to guide him in a round pen. With a bullwhip in hand (that would Never be used on the animal!) I had that horse going in whatever direction I chose. I got him to start, stop, walk, canter, run, turn. I can feel and almost see my energy at work.

This was the same for each of us there that day.

We were all in the same movie.

Trendy Thursdays ~ Keep it Smooth

Many times, I hit the shower and use my favorite products but on the weekends or on days where I have more time, I love to try new things. One of those new things may be products that I have to take more time to use. Recently, I received two products from Tree Hut, the Shea Butter and the Body Scrub with Brazil Nut. For those that have come over and watched me wash something or just talk for a long time, they find that I constantly moisturize. I do it so much that recently, my friend @nikisnotes commented on how she felt dry just watching me use so much! Brazil Nut has a great scent and I am in LOVE with the Body Scrub. Not only does it make your skin super soft but it's not so gritty where you feel that you have a bit of sandpaper. The Shea Butter has a nice thickness that's not too oily.

Your skin is definitely your best asset and whether you spend a lot of time at spas or re-create your own at home, you'll want to focus on spending time keeping yourself looking fresh! Trendy Thursdays ~ Project Detox: The Meal of the Moment

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we realized that a scent can calm us and create its own memory of peace and tranquility! Today, Keren brings us to the perfect moment with a meal.

I’m a young girl at a family function when I notice my L.A. based uncle sitting by the patio with the sun shining on his face. He is eating something from the fruit tray. By the looks of it one might think he was eating a slice of heaven. I immediately dart over.

‘Taste this Fig’ he says. Still standing I take a small bite and begin chewing. As if the faster I chew the quicker, I too, will taste.

‘Whoa. Slow it down. He tells me.

Sit down. Close your eyes.

Now take another bite.

Roll it in your mouth and let it touch the different taste buds.

Smell the experience.

Feel the texture & sensation.

Taste.’

(Wow. Was that the SAME Fig?) I recall opening my eyes & needing a moment just to snap back.

This was my first experience with Mindful Eating. I confess. Originally, I wrote it off as his ‘California’ way of eating.

And I was New York.

Fast forward to Project Detox where I am on the hunt to infuse balance into my every day life. When I see an activity called Mindful Eating I immediately sign up. The curiosity. The nostalgia. The craving for another Miraval-esque experience.

And after being gently slumber I woke up reborn. Hungry like a baby.

We sit with an appetite and an open mind in the dining room. Table set for about 20 guests. (Eating & mingling. Perfect!). Amongst us sits Junelle, the nutritionist. As she guides us through the meal with tips and teachings along the way, we quickly realize that the Only mingling was going to be with our inner selves and with the food!

We are not to talk to each other. We are to focus on the act of eating. Take a moment to notice our surroundings. The setting. The plate. The color and consistency of the food. To take a bite and feel the texture and temperature of the food in our mouths. Acknowledge the process of chewing and swallowing. The pause in between. Notice the after taste. Breathe.

It was challenging (& a bit awkward) to eat quietly in lieu of being amongst new friends but the greater the challenge the greater the reward. In no time did I learn about my personal relationship with food. About eating intuitively.

We were all shocked at how much food was left on our plates when we felt full and how delicious the experience was. The French know this. Quality over Quantity. They are thin.

It makes sense. Your brain receives a signal from the body through the central nervous system that you are hungry, eating and full. If your mind is ‘multi-tasking’ or rushing through a meal then there is no mind-body connection. You then miss the essential flavors and pleasures of the food & your digestion efficiency is decreased (and how ironic that IBS and stomach disease is on the rise). Plus, your brain may miss the messages that you are even eating - let alone full.

It may still think you are hungry. You continue eating.

No skinny jeans for you.

Our lives are in high-speed. If on-the-go we can talk, text, trade stocks, email, shop and for just about Anything…’there’s an App for that’, then you KNOW eating on-the-go must have been mastered way before that. Long ago in the U.S. eating has been defaulted as ‘another task to do on our list’. We eat meals while working at our desks, driving, watching TV, even walking.

OK, clearly we cannot eat every meal in silent focusing on the act of eating. Dinner with friends & family is Critical and there are times we simply must eat on-the-go. But between eating 3 meals and about 2 snacks per day, we have over 35 opportunities a week to attempt it. In between it all, we Can balance a sense of well-being with our high speed culture.

The picture above is my son ‘E’ at my favorite lunchtime-waterfall-escape-spot in NYC two blocks from my office. It’s important to me he learns the importance of mindful eating early on. No write offs this time.

Most cities are packed with many public parks, gardens, waterfalls, etc. and with an iPOD you can be staging moments for your meals just about anywhere. Another trick is to at least eat the first bite of every meal mindfully to set the tone. Putting your fork down in between bites really does help (thanks Junelle).

Book time on your calendar to eat mindful meals. Treat it with the importance of a business meeting or a trip to the doctor. This is time for you. A much needed break. A reconnection.

Slow down. Become aware. Chew. Pause. Savor. Enjoy.

Trendy Thursdays ~ Project Detox: Gently Slumber

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we saw through the world through a new lens in order to understand where we are through a different set of eyes! Today, Keren embraces the art and necessity of slumber for full restoration.

When was the last time you’ve slept?

Really slept.

Care free. Like a baby.

That deep sleep you can taste. Leaving you satiated.

Refreshed.

Renewed.

If you are anything like me, the answer to that may be … Not since you’ve had your baby!!! (even if that ‘baby’ is your business venture or new career move).

Especially in today’s globalized, saturated & media infested culture where reading a book in bed looks more like; T.V. on one channel (DRVing another). Clutching phone pending reply text. Laptop open with your ebay auction. Tweet Tweet ‘in bed relaxing with great book!”

Simply put. Most of us do not get a good night’s sleep.

Although I am all about our high-speed-techy lifestyle and have already been anointed ‘queen of multitasking’, I am a firm believer that in order to be healthy, productive and survive as mankind, we must now-even more so than ever-infuse balance into our daily lives. Clear the screen in our minds. Slow down. Breathe.

On this trip I learned a lesson I could have learned long ago by simply watching my baby sleep.

Babies are known to be very mindful. Intuitive. Live in the current moment. Focus on what is directly in front of them. Tune everything else out. Bed time prep includes a warm bath, milk, lullaby, book (and it’s all about That book!).

Miraval knew this.

They were determined to share.

Their rule of pre-booking appointments and programs in advance of your trip is not only so that you can focus on Mindfulness but they also tailor the trip to be a unique experience to your needs. Upon hearing that I was a full time working mother, the booking specialist that consulted with me, immediately pre-booked me for a nightly massage recommending the lavender infused Sweet Slumber & suggested I take the Evening Meditation class in the evenings. Since your all inclusive stay includes a spa (or golf) credit of $125 per night of stay, you are forced to get pampered and relax. There are no excuses.

I listened and was tuned in. I SPAed in the evening before my evening meditation or yoga class. I was grateful.

It was now time to turn in.

This was when I discovered the scent that has me staging moments back home.

The in-room toiletries are that the intoxicating cactus cream scent! . Miraval’s signature Cactus Cream bath collection captures the indigenous essence of Tucson in the form of a body cream, shower gel, facial cleanser, and other products. By this phase in my journey, the desert scent has come full circle and means much more to me …besides the fact that the aroma is simply divine. Clearly I was not the first to want to take this experience home.

As I sat on what seemed like the most comfortable bed ever, I noticed sitting next to me was a little note card & pen from the Miraval staff. As a list girl, I always have a pen and notepad by my side to capture a bright idea or a ‘to do’ reminder. To Brain dump. But since I was on the journey into myself, it was interesting to use it for the purpose of exploring...Me.

One of the most important parts of my yoga practice is Shavasana (Corpse Pose). It looks simple but it is actually one of the hardest poses to do as it requires you to relax your mind and body. To let all the energy you created from your hard work to seep into every part of your being. To reflect. To heal. To Inspire.

Sitting on that cloud-like bed, relaxed and engulfed in aromatherapy, I took a few moments to reflect and allow all the positive energy, massages, scents, experiences, & revelations of my day to relax and heal me.

Trendy Thursdays ~ Meet Karen Creatrix of Purple Lab NYC!

This week's beauty segment is special as I had the chance to not only interview Karen Robinovitz, Creatrix of Purple Lab , but we have a recent video of her on an appearance at CW11 earlier this week AND I actually hung out with her and some amazing people from her team at a recent beauty/yoga event! So everything you may have wanted to know about her, the brand and Huge Lips Skinny Hips, can be found right here! Not a bad way to spend this Thursday. The interview is below and of course the video is above.

For the past few years, we have heard of a lot of products that have hit shelves that plump your lips. Although I was a fan of Too Faced, I didn't like the tingling (read - burn) that I felt when I used it and I felt that it made my lips feel dry and a bit sticky which is not what I was going for. When I used products that had the plump "solution" and color in it, once again the sensation wasn't pleasant and my lips felt tight. Somehow there didn't seem to be a balance. Then as I was reading Twitter, I happened to see that one of my friends Jeannine of Beauty Sweet Spot @beautysweetspot, was talking to @PurpleLabNYC and that various members of their team was online. I was definitely intrigued, much like the founder I love purple and I wanted to know about the lab. I found out that this was a beauty line and one that empowered women (more below in the interview) and I loved the collection and the names. Of course after reaching out to their PR and talking with the Creatrix, I found myself accepting an invite to a Yoga Beauty party and got the opportunity to try the gloss and I have to say, I'm a fan! Being someone that has recently embraced wearing lip gloss that has a tint, it's definitely something that I will continue to grab when I head out the door.

The event was an AMAZING night with an intense yoga session that was desparately needed as many times, I'm so busy that I never take a second. In addition to the yoga, bonding and just enjoying one another's company, we had a session that was so intimate and revealing that I won't go into detail but it was amazing that everyone in the room seemed to be pushing or going into a direction and they needed an affirmation of sorts. It was such an honor to be in the room and here these revelations. As I left the amazing home of Libby the yoga instructor, I realized that the Purple Lab family (which will be making some amazing moves) is a tight family and definitely one of those companies that are truly holistic. It's not just about making an amazing product but the very events that they create nourish the body, mind and soul. If there was ever a company that I wanted to continue working with or for, this would be on the top of my list! Karen, the Creatix was such a profound presence that I'm excited to present the following interview that I had with her. Although this was done a day or so prior to meeting her, I can truly say that the person that I met is every bit of what you're about to read in her own words!

Interview with Karen Robinovitz of Purple Lab

Where do you see Purple Lab in terms of future product extensions?

We are in development with six new products right now and it will eventually be a line that covers all beauty needs - full face, creams, cleansers, hair, maybe even shoes one day! Everything will be double duty with a lot of flair and personality. I believe you can be sophisticated in formulation, chic and whimsical and fun at once. While the products are serious, my approach is more cheeky and that will always be a part of Purple Lab's DNA.

As far as specifics, I can't share just yet but I can share what we're doing for Breast Cancer Awareness month - a lip gloss called SWAC (Sealed with a Cure) in partnership with the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation. I had never heard of triple negative breast cancer but when I met a group of amazing women who lost a good friend to this subtype of the disease, I thought it was important to do something. So this gloss is infused with Ecchinachea for the immune system, mangosteens which is a tropical fruit that is full of antioxidants, vanilla which is a natural anti-depressant and Vitamins C and E for moisture and nourishment. If you're going through chemo, the lips get very dry.

For a dose of glamour - and I believe all women should feel beautiful, especially when they are fighting an illness that, in essence, impacts their femininity - there is real gold flakes, adding sparkle.

The color is named Nancy, who inspired the foundation's creation when she passed away. Her friends created it in her honor. The gloss comes with her story.

It's a beautiful product, inside and out.

What can we expect to see for the Holiday Season?

Two fabulous new shades of Huge Lips Skinny Hips: Limo to Lobby, a lovely pink named after the fashion pieces made for fashion's sake, not for standing or sitting... literally, going from the limo to the lobby; Goji Berry Smoothie, a soft berry gloss after my favorite breakfast treat. It comes with my recipe.

A lot of new products will launch in January and you'll see soon! Still under wraps!

How did you come up with the name of the gloss line - were there other names that you thought about?

Well, the brand name, Purple Lab, is because my favorite color is purple - it's strong, playful, fun, and chic, everything the brand is. And Lab is two-fold - there is a mad scientist in my brain, constantly thinking of mixing things in an unexpected way, and also because I was applying to med school when I was in college (and I majored for biology). When I decided to move to New York to pursue a different career - one in fashion and beauty - my dad joked that I was turning in my lab coat for a "fab coat."

Huge Lips Skinny Hips was the ONLY name for this gloss - how could it be anything else? It came to me when I was at a cocktail party and plowed through so many carbs that I had to go home - I had ring around the waist and my pants felt one size too small. I joked to my husband, "if my lip gloss would plump my lips and not my hips, I wouldn't be in this mess." And that's when it hit me: lip gloss that has plumper and Hoodia! Huge Lips Skinny Hips!

The point of the gloss is to be a beautiful way of reminding yourself to be healthy. Appetite is mind over matter so this helps my mind!

How long has Purple Lab been around?

Launched in May - but it took two years of incubation and figuring things out to get here.

What has been the most unexpected part of this experience in creating this line?

Everything! I cannot believe how much goes into manufacturing, production, testing, warehousing, shipping - more than I ever imagined. I blog and vlog about it on my site so that it can be a road map for anyone looking to start her own thing.

How do you choose the colors that will be apart of the line and which one is your favorite?

I don't have a favorite - that is like asking a mother which child she loves the most. These are my babies. I think about the classic, go-to shades women need - I poll them, ask on Twitter and Facebook, and then I test them on women of all shades and complexions to make sure that each shade is universally flattering. I want the red to look good on a fair skin, dark skin, olive skin, etc. And same with all of the colors. It will be different with foundation and concealer, but for lips, it's about having the shades you can rely on no matter what!

I too love pole dancing classes and go to S Factor. I think it has such an empowering message and is a nice way to step outside of what I normally do to relax and yet have fun. What about that philosophy carries over to the line?

S-Factor and I have very similar mantras. We believe women should love their bodies, which is why there is a color on the line called "Love Your Thighs" (Just because I named the gloss Huge Lips Skinny Hips doesn't mean I define skinny nor does it mean we have to be skinny or that is the ideal - it's all cheeky and fun). We believe that women should feel their best, sexiest, and own every room she walks in. We believe women should be inspired and go after every single dream they have. Each product comes with a love note about its inspiration so that the woman using it can have that sense of glamour with them where ever they go.

Will you ever name the products after celebrities?

Well, we do have Worship Kate, a pinkish/mauve gloss with a hint of glitter. That was inspired by Kate Moss. We'll see where the rest of the line takes me.

Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ Through the Lenses

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we took a swing at seeing things from another point of view and today we look at things through the lense.

I have always been fascinated with professional photography. The eternal capture of a moment! Yet, I have never actually taken a class…short of a few priceless tips from leading photographers I have met through the years on photo shoots.

Combined with my love of nature, hiking and learning Anything new, the Photography Hike on the activities list was clearly my picture perfect next step.

After the basic 35mm photography class (cameras provided by Miraval), the instructor, a 15 year Miraval veteran and Mindfulness Guru, took us on a hike of the beautiful resort grounds to utilize our newly learned photographic skills. They strategically take you out at the end of the day during what they describe as the ‘magic hour’ capturing the last moments of light as it casts a warm hue over the desert floor.

It is meditative.

Still embraced by the Cocktail of the Senses and enjoying the beauty of the Sanoran Desert. I was now hiking through the same scenery as Desert Oasis but with a fresh set of eyes and with my word of the moment in tow (ala Mindfulness). Some of the pictures I took are posted above.

As I have already established in A View of the Valley, Miraval was designed to be a journey into your self so clearly this Photography Hike is more than a nod to the art of photography.

It is the Art of seeing the big picture while zooming in on the details. Of balancing motion with stillness. Of finding beauty in anything. Of gaining a different perspective on things by using lighting, shadows, zoom, angles. Of understanding how two people can look at the same thing, yet see it differently. And of how one person can view the same thing on different days and see it differently. Of looking at things/challenges in your life in an abstract way in order to find outside-the-box solutions. Of using the 'magic hour' to reflect on your day, and determine what issues can you step back to view in a different light? Of seeing the world through different lenses.

Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ Swing & Prayer

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we took in the view of the valley but today we let go on a swing and a prayer!

With over 150 programs and activities at Miraval to choose from, I was able to design a vacation that was tailored to Me. And how smart that a Miraval staff member reaches out to you in advance of your trip via email to plan out your program and spa itinerary? That way you are able to enjoy the trip from the moment you get to the resort (or more like from the moment you step onto their complimentary airport transfer).

They really want you to Live and experience the present moment. To feed the “i”. Who knew I was this hungry?! So many amazing things to do and so little time (Note to Self: Begin to plan your next trip back here!).

With an activity description of ‘Just Let Go’, clearly Swing and Prayer had to be one of the first things I signed up for on Project Detox . And I am glad that I did.

People sign up for many reasons beyond adventure seeking from wanting to overcome fear of heights, to learning to ‘let go’ or trust. Some go just to have fun and are shocked by the meaningful takeaway.

Early morning, we hiked out into the desert grounds with sunscreen and an open mind. We got to the area that had a 35 foot pole, a pulley system, a ladder, four harnesses & helmets. There were also wood chairs set up in a circle where we all sat and--guided by the instructor--ran through our instructions, expectations, intentions & reminders to practice being mindful during this exercise!

We all had a task whether it was to bring the ladder, grab the rope, pull and cheer on while each of us went up, one at a time, for the 35 foot drop & swing.

I am third.

There is lots of movement, hustling, communicating, listening, & excitement on the way up. Then a quiet peaceful ‘pause’ at the top much like the pause in between a deep inhale and exhale.

The drop. The feeling of pure release and letting go.

Swinging through the air like a bird I can actually hear the wind flapping in my ears. I am a kid again thinking of nothing but the wonderfully fun present moment.

I am the now.

Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ A View of the Valley

Last week, we enjoyed guacomole the way that it was meant to be but today we learn about the importance of ladies night!

Project Detox (PD) was designed like Yoga 101. As soon as I stepped on the mat (ala Desert Oasis) I used my senses to let go of daily stresses and to reconnect.

I have now completed my prerequisite and was ready to begin the journey into myself.

Tucson; Mecca of destination spa resorts, houses one of my absolute fave.

Miraval® Arizona Resort & Spa; Home of ‘Life in Balance’, ‘Mindfulness Experience’ & ‘Aha Moments’ naturally then becomes the next stop on my PD journey.

The name Miraval is made up of the Spanish words mirrar (to look or view/mirror) and valle (valley). The 400 acre resort was designed to be a journey into one’s self. A view of the valley. The name can also be interpreted as “mirror of all” as once you are relaxed by the all-inclusive pampering of mind, body, and senses you can see things in yourself and your life more clearly and/or from a different perspective.

In one of their brochures sits a quote by Marcel Proust “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes”.

When I first arrived at the resort, I was able to catch the ‘Mindfulness at Miraval’ program: The perfect way to start the walk through the valley of my being. There I learned that the “i” in Miraval is Me. (It’s like I died and went to holistic-Me-time heaven!). The teacher opened my eyes to how important holistic awareness (mindfulness) of the body, mind and heart is to getting the most out of any experience. How to be mindful, not only at Miraval, but in every experience in daily life (work, children, relationships even eating & walking). This will lead to a balanced life with more focus, ease and intention.

They were right.

The only relationship I need to focus on at the moment is with my inner self.

Apparently we haven’t hung out 1 on1 in a while and Lady’s night was long overdue!

Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ Food For the Soul

Last week, we were on the rocks but fortunately, we can have an amazing guac experience.

My daily life is in NYC.

A gastronomical party 24-7!

Even a quick simple lunch can be the fine creation of a world re-known chef. My taste buds are truly lucky.

Yet there is something to say about dining alfresco on vacation (especially on a rejuvenating solo trip like Project Detox) with menus that embody the culture of that area that somehow takes the gastronomical experience to a whole to level.

It’s like food for the soul.

Dining Old Pueblo style within the desert oasis environment becomes then an important part of my journey in Tucson. With dishes that culminate a Native American and Mexican flare plus many restaurants to choose from – it was fun and yum.

But there was one dining experience that I truly wished I could take home with me and in a way – I did.

The tableside guacamole at the Flying V was simply divine. The waitress brought a rolling cart over with the ingredients for a very zesty-fruity-spicy-fresh tasting version of guacamole that was tailored to my liking. She opened and mashed the perfectly ripened avocado and made it fresh right in front me in the authentic Molcajete (Mortar & Pestle) bowls – AKA the ‘Mexican blender’.

I can still taste the moment.

Sitting on the balcony, looking out onto the Sonoran desert landscaped golf course, waterfalls, pond & Catalina Mountains. Hearing the sounds of summer. Feeling the desert dry heat while still engulfed by the cocktail of the senses. The freshness of the air. The stillness of Life, balanced with movement of nature. By the time I dipped the authentic-tasting tortilla chips into the guacamole with (my extra) lime and cilantro it tasted so amazing my sense of taste was rejoicing. I promised myself to bring this experience home to my next summer soirée. To make it the reason to have a get-together.

I just Had to snag the ingredients!!!

And I Did. (Including some tips).

FLYING V TABLESIDE GUACAMOLE RECIPE

Slice two ripe avocados in half (tip: they ripen after three to four days plus keep the pit to add to finished mix as it will preserve the guacamole’s distinctive green color while giving the dip an authentic look) . Scoop out the fruit from each half and gently mash. Add in ¼ C diced red onions, 1 tsp. minced garlic, ½ tsp. course kosher salt, ½ tsp. freshly ground pepper, 1 tbsp. freshly chopped cilantro, 1 tbsp. freshly chopped jalapeno pepper, 1-2 tsp. finely cut mango, 2 tsp. scallions, 1 C diced tomato (tip: add tomato prior to serving) and squeeze in 1 whole lime. Mix it all together (tip: don’t over mix there should be lumps of avocado as well).

Prepare and serve in the Molcajete (Mortar & Pestle) bowls with salsa chips (or fresh cut vegetables).

Add at least 5 friends. 10 C of great drinks. Blend with lots of laughter.

One rejuvenating-deep-relaxation-massage on the rocks please!

As soon as I learned from the director at the Loews Lakeside Spa that hot stone massage in its new age--as opposed to stone age--form had originated in Tucson, I found myself laying in heaven on the rocks in a New York minute.

Stone therapy is believed to date back as far as 5000 years ago in India as well as in many other cultures and healing rituals. We have all heard or even worn a stone that is believed to have healing or protecting powers. Everywhere I went in the southwest it was apparent by the sales of the native suede stone bags (BTW some were real cute with fringe and chains). But it was in the early 90’s that it entered the modern spa scene. Mary Nelson, a massage therapist from Tucson in an effort to keep working with her passion after she had an injured shoulder, followed her intuition, “picked up the stones” and began to use them to assist her in providing treatments. In time, practice and much research, she developed LaStone® Therapy which uses a combination of hot, frozen and room temperature stones for overall balance & spiritual healing. It soon began to take off and LaStone® (with other translations of it) was circulating in the better spa’s and massage circuit. Tucson natives consider hot stone massage another southwestern gem and the Loews Lakeside Spa take pride in having hot stone therapy on their extensive menu of services.

Certainly not my first hot stone massage but definitely one of my better experiences, the Native Hot Stone Massage I received began with a consultation. I am a firm believer that communication is Key to a good massage or to any type of body, energy or healing work. Your therapist is your healer and, like Reiki, must focus his/her energy on your specific needs.

Upon learning about my obsession with indigenous scents and desert healing (remember…I just finished my cocktail of the senses journey), she pulled out a small label-free bottle of creosote oil (OMG! there’s that scent again!) so that I may experience the aroma of that unique after-the-desert-rain scent.

Lying on the hot basalt stones facing up, I felt the immediate penetration of heat into various parts of my body. Warm. Relaxing. Releasing.

Then she began to put more stones on strategic parts of my chakra points including in between my toes and under my feet that have been walking through the desert oasis all day. Balancing. Relieving. Therapeutic.

But it’s the moment the smooth hot stones stroke your skin that brings you a sensation unmatched by a simple massage. What’s great is that when you finally do receive the massage, the heat from the stones have loosened up the muscles allowing to work the deeper muscle layers (of course the heat from the stones also allow the oil to penetrate into your skin faster like an insta body facial). What I love is how this allows you to release toxins and benefit from a relaxing massage like you do from the deep tissue shiatsu-like ones. Perfect for balancing Relaxation with Healing. The Japanese believe that one stroke with the stones is like 10 strokes with the bear hand. I believe them.

For ages, Native Americans have been using stones in sweat lodges and for cramping. Oriental medicine uses stones to encourage a better flow of energy, treat disease and muscular pain. Europeans use it for injury relief. In South America, stones are used to aid in disease, pregnancy and childbirth. They even hold the stones in their hands for strength. For the Hawaiians, the Lava Stone is a symbol for healing and protection. For this full-time working NYC Mom, the Native Hot Stone Massage was a multidimensional therapy used to more effectively relax, release & balance my over worked body and mind. Connecting with Nature as I held the stones and the creosote scent held me, this was native healing pre-modern medicine.

I’m constantly running all over the place. Before it involved showroom presentations, launches, etc! Now it’s also included me launching a new collection within my jewelry line and being a mentor on To Be a Star! Now if you can't do a full on mask - sometimes you don't have 20 mins, you can use the Eye Sheets for 10 mins! Once again, pull them out of the package and just put them on. After you remove them, any excess serum can be rubbed in and you go from tired goddess to the one who can take on the world! In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we arrived in the gorgeous Desert Oasis of Tucson and today we continue with an interesting cocktail!

For me, the best part of the journey on the Loews Ventana Canyon (LVCR) ‘Window Trail’ (and the rest of the resort grounds) was the cocktail of the senses that seemed to bathe me with every step.

Healing. Organic. Aromatherapy.

…and I was soaking up every drop allowing it to hydrate my soul.

With 66 different types of plants and cacti native to the Sanoran Desert, identified on this trail, I was not only inspired visually, mentally & spiritually, but I also did much of my exploring closing my eyes and following the scents. According to LVCR, when they built the resort they relocated 3,500 cacti to preserve the natural environment. Nothing was destroyed. All was left for Me to enjoy.

Take a NYC girl that is obsessed with picking her own fruits and vegetables. Put her in the Sanoran Desert Oasis at the start of the bloom season for the Prickly Pear Cactus. Watch how quickly she finds ways to experience this fruit bearing cactus.

Thanks to my new “Old Pueblo” friend (Emilio the taxi driver/tour guide) I discovered a lot about this multi-use South Western Gem.

The Prickly Pear Cactus one of the most widespread cacti on Earth, with over 100 species, is edible, medicinal and is the state plant of Texas. The pad called ‘nopales’ is a signature vegetable for Mexicans that (raw) tastes like green beans or asparagus. It is eaten in many ways from raw, pickled or sautéed with garlic to scrambled eggs, salads, salsa & many Mexican dishes. The ripe prickly pear fruit (“tuna”) is sweet & juicy can be diced as toppings for yogurt, blended into a smoothie, made into a gelato, syrup, jelly, candy, alcohol, flour & tea. Low in calories & fat, it contains many essential vitamins and is rich in antioxidants.

Some herbal medicinal uses are believed to be for diabetes, cholesterol, colitis, viral infections, for first aid or as a mosquito repellant. Emilio tells me that people even eat Nopal prior to drinking to prevent hangovers.

If we are talking drinks, you must try the Prickly Pear Margarita at the LVCR Flying V Bar & Grill or their Cascade Lounge – Yum! I love how the LVCR infuses the indigenous nature into the character of their resort leaving you with a very unique experience.

For a more holistic approach to hydrating & mood lifting, the ‘Sanoran Desert Ultimate Rehydration Polish’ body treatment at the Loews Lakeside Spa gets you all ‘wrapped up’ in Prickly Pear. Since Project Detox was kicked off to infuse balance into my everyday life, clearly I had to get the bottle of the Prickly Pear Jojoba Body Butter that they use in this treatment from the Spa’s Boutique so that my body and soul can ‘drink’ from this hydrating cocktail.

There's something in the air! I love the fact that I have been able to try a number of items that are good for your body and overall health! As always, the links within the spread can be clicked on. In the spring, I introduced you to Functionalab which allows you to take various supplements that are targeted to your general health and of course specific areas that are of interest to you. I love that they have a concierge service that allows you to always have a beauty consultant that you can talk to! Right after I came off of my month long Functionalab #02, I went on to Glowelle which is a beauty supplement that allows you to have your beauty powder put right into your drink. I love that I can drink this and run around town! Votre Vu is a beauty brand that has created Snapdragon which has various healthy vitamins included within a beauty mix; however, you have to drink this within 7 days or so and it definitely has to be refrigerated as well! Fresh Diet is an amazing food delivery service where you can plan out your meals iunin advance to come to your home or wherever you are! The meals include a breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and dessert. Not only is this a perfect way to maintain or lose weight but it's nice to have fresh ingredients and meals that have your friends asking you how did you come up with such an assortment of foods! Finally, one of my favorite items has been Matcha Source! I love that this green tea can be a latte, used within a sauce or even used as a frosting as well. Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ Desert Oasis

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we arrived in Tuscon just in time to catch the rare site of the Organ Pipe Cactus which only blooms once a year at night! Today we continue with her thoughts and begin to understand ourselves!

The Journey into Myself in what I refer to as Project Detox, was designed to flow much like my Yoga routine.

Of course you can practice yoga just about anywhere, but it is much more efficient and effective to practice in an environment that is quiet, clean, peaceful & infused with nature.

The concept may be cliché but it seems pretty Obvi to me.

If your schedule is anything like mine then simply getting to class means you literally run in last minute still catching your breath from your rainy-commute-home-from-work followed by the parenting after school routine of playtime-dinner-clean up-bath time-brush teeth-read books-bed time. All eyes are on you, as you attempt to squeeze the yoga mat in between your classmates in an angle that keeps at least some sort of jagged edged view of your instructor. Once you finally do sit down and attempt to catch up to the class your intro breathing resembles something like this…

Inhale. Exhale.

Inhale. (“Did I put the milk back in the fridge?”) Exhale.

Inhale (“Must remember to renew my yoga package ooh gotta stretch my legs”) Exhale.

OK. So clearly your mind and body take time (& effort) to relax but how great is getting a jumpstart (or more like quick fix) from your instructor as she is Staging Moments for you?

She turns down the lights. Puts on relaxing yoga music. Adjusts the temperature in the room. Gives you a visual throw back to nature by telling you to ‘be a tree’. Ground yourself at the root/core while allowing yourself to softly sway with your breath as the tree does in the wind. She then lights a sage’ish aromatherapy candle and we chant.

OHM………

(Yum!) Release. Unwind. Become aware. Reconnect.

Begin to take my stance on the edge of the diving board to jump into myself.

Ironic (& challenging) how you actually use your internal and external senses to assist in bridging the gap between mind and body only to then work on disconnecting from your senses in order to get to the true inner you. This was my P.D. task.

For Project Detox the Sonoran Desert becomes my 'yoga mat'.

When I discovered that one of my favorite Hotel chains, the Loews built their Tucson property with a unique balance between keeping “[local] Nature in mind” and creating a luxury resort & spa (which for Loews means luxurious yet comfortable, kid & pet friendly yet perfect for couples or solo spa/golfing trips, fine dining & pampering, Me First!) I knew I found my bridge for that mind-body-spirit connection.

The Loews Ventana Canyon Resort is a unique resort that embodies the pure essence of Tucson. The hotel is organically situated at the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains and is practically camouflaged into the beautiful desert landscape.

This picture was taken from the balcony of my suite. Notice how the hotel has the same DNA as the desert cacti and mountains and how it’s embedded within the environment seamlessly.

All my senses are engaged.

The healing dry heat, the visual beauty of Nature at its purest form, the soothing sound of the cascading eighty foot waterfall and the unique taste of the Hummingbird Tea. This is a unique tea blend made exclusively for Loews Ventana and is a medley of orange peals and the plants that are indigenous to the area like the Ayurvedic Hibiscus flower, Calming Desert Lavender, etc. How incredible to actually be able to taste the Tucson flora as do the local Hummingbirds (hence the name)! Grab a complementary cup at the lobby, order a cup from one of their six restaurants and lounges or, like me, buy a box on-site to take the experience home with you.

Whenever I travel, it is key for me to learn as much about the destination as possible (especially the best kept secrets!).

What is cool about this hotel is that they’ve teamed up with the Arizona-Sanora Desert Museum, Tucson Botanical Gardens & Friends of Sabino Canyon to create an on-site nature trail (called the “Window Walk”) that educates the guests on the indigenous plant life, native birds, butterflies, reptiles, mammals, geology of Tucson, the life of a Saguaro, the history of the Loews Ventana and a stunning display of minerals.

The clearly labeled signage that seems to grow from the stones are enjoyable to read – especially when playing ‘Name That Aromatherapy’ as you attempt to distinguish between the fresh scents of the Jojoba Plant (familiar) & rare desert rain scent of the Creosote Bush (new) on the trail only to recognize them on the sign as ‘that key ingredient’ in a new fabulous product you just bought from Sephora on 5th Ave.

Wearing the recommended color red to attract the hummingbirds, I wander into this journey that begins at the Koi fish pond right outside the concierge desk and takes me through a desert oasis for the senses to drink.

This is a Desert Oasis and I am the thirsty camel.

Over the past few months, it's been sad to see a few of my favorite magazines go; however, I'm so pleased to see that there are amazing issues out there that are always waiting to be discovered! I was in SoBe in June and found out about SoBeFiT Magazine (click the link in the spread) which is a health magazine that although it's based in SoBe, it has an interesting approach to health. This magazine shows how women and men can exercise - this is perfect as Paul and I work together at home and it's nice that we can modify our routines for our bodies. In addition, I love that this issue looked at the way people exercise by age, making water exciting and adding some healthy elements to make it more than basic H2O! If you're into health drinks, you can make your own and you can learn how to make various foods in a healthy way! There were so many great articles that it's a good thing that each issue spans 2 months so that you have plenty of time to try out different routines and to see what you like cooking or doing! Available at various magazine stands and online, you'll enjoy making this a magazine that should never leave your coffee table (unless you're replacing it with the next one)!

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we prepped with her for the trip and today, we're at the first stop! Thankfully, Keren will share her journey which will provide a little insight into our needs of finding our equilibrium.

For this full-time working mom that lacks sunshine, serenity and nature, a jolt back to equilibrium begins with detoxing from the jungles of NYC into the warm soothing arms of the Sonoran Dessert.

Sunshine. Straight up for me please. Dry. No olives.

And ‘according to the Tucson locals’, I was actually in the sunniest state in the U.S. (& one of the sunniest places on earth)…. Sorry Florida I love ya dearly & I know you have Sunshine State plastered on your drivers licenses but I did get the gossip on how Arizona really outsunned you but let you keep the title ‘Sunshine State’ back in the 70’s since they had the Grand Canyon as one of the world’s natural wonder’s to boast (& of course the added bonus title of ‘Copper State’ for their mineral wealth).

Their proof they claim is in the Biosphere.

As in, the choice to build the famed Biosphere 2 in Arizona because it most resembled outer space (ala’ lots of sunshine!) . Biosphere 2 is a glass dome which contains the largest closed man-made ecosystem ever created in order to study the interactions between humans, farming and technology with the rest of nature and to explore the possibility of humans living in one of these in space – talk about a destination spa fit for Jane Jetson, I’d love to go there!). And yes, this Biosphere is the place George Costanza referred to on Seinfeld when he lied and said “Elaine has been chosen to represent the Upper West Side in the next Biosphere project”.

Stepping out of Tucson Airport into the bright early morning sun was more like stepping in to a detoxifying sauna. You instantly feel your body melt away the stress in the dry desert heat.

This is the moment when you close your eyes and take it all in. (..and I mean Really close your eyes as you don’t have to keep one eye open to watch over your lil one!!)

The solitude. The heat. The stillness. The scent (gosh that clean scent! of mesquite, cactus, sun, rain, flora).

When I opened my eyes, I was standing in front of a very rare & beautiful sight: The flower bloom of the Organ Pipe Cactus situated right at the airport taxi station. This cactus blooms only at night and once a year but I was able to see it! Not only was it early morning and the flower didn’t close yet from the night but since it has many buds that open up on different days between May and July there is a span of a few shorts weeks out of the year where you can catch a glimpse of one of the buds blooming at the tip of the cactus’ arm.

It was one of those moments.

Now that I am back home to my busy urban life I infuse that detoxifying moment into my every day by simply lighting my Cactus Cream Travel Candle, closing my eyes and allowing the heat and scent transport me to Tucson.
