Trendy Thursdays ~ A Moment With Lia Schorr

We all enjoy going to spas but it's always nice to speak to those who creates the spaces that we frequent. Many know that Lia Schorr is known for her facials and that she has written books on the subject and has dedicated most of her life to this. Last week, I took a moment to find out more about her and to hear what inspired her to create not only the salon but the institute that also bares her name. Her interview was candid and an inspiration to anyone that has a focus and a dream that they want to put into action.

Lia Schorr opened her Day Spa in the 80's with $500. She spent 7 years in a kibbutz in Israel and it was being in this space that really allowed her to connect with makeup and skincare as she didn't feel that she was pretty but she knew she could contribute to other's beauty routines which became the overall passion. She realized that in the US that she could pioneer this portion of the industry by endorsing skincare services for men and women. At the time, these services were considered something that those who were affluent enjoyed as it was a luxury. But Lia's mission was that using proper ingredients with education and skincare would allow her to have high standards with great services for optimal treatments while making everything affordable and available.

Over the past 10 years, more spas opened with services and the industry was not only competitive but there were various gimmicks running throughout it as well. Due to the recession, it created an equalizing effect where those spas that were truly good at what they did were able to survive while those that weren't faded from the competition. Lia found that her common sense approach and focusing on the basics allowed her to survive and to create a trust building system as she "doesn't promise what she can't deliver". In addition, with the success of her business, she retains a dominant presence by being in charge of all aspects of the business and found that even she climbed her own ladder in order to understand what it takes to make her business run.

Her success is not only in providing amazing services that are affordable and attainable but in also giving back, 20 years ago, she created her own institute where she teaches others so that they can certified and she continues to teach the importance of self discipline, providing opportunities and being driven in order to advance. Students that have the need and interest, are able to train with Lia and to learn the craft that she pioneered. Walking through her spa and institute, it's easy to see her influence within every part of her world.

Of course, you can't talk to a beauty expert without finding out what they think the keys are to maintaining great skin. Lia believes that living a good lifestyle (getting enough sleep, reducing your stress, getting exercise, eating well), have great relationships with friends and family, good values and loving what you do - allow you to look fab! We always need to make sure that the negatives of baggage, anger, etc are kicked out and that we should smile and laugh at ourselves as well.

Fashionable Fridays ~ Lauren Conrad Goes Beyond the Hills and LA Candy

I was never a Laguna Beach fan EVER but somehow when Lauren moved on to The Hills, I took the ride with her! We can all talk about the scripting but it's a fun show that definitely resonates with a lot of us when it comes to our friends, frenemies and whatever else travels within our circles. Season after season I enjoyed seeing her style and how it evolved. When she launched her first line, I was skeptical - at this point who hasn't tried bringing out a line? But when I covered Fashion Week in Sept 2008, I wore her line exclusively on and off camera! Her line had a great sense of style and fun! There are dresses that I still pack with me when I head to South Beach, Las Vegas, etc. Although I was sad to see her end the line, I knew that she would reintroduce her fashionable sensibilities whether it was a future collaboration or a new direction of the line.

As I read LA Candy this summer on a plane heading to Chicago (yes, I read the entire book on one flight simply because we spent three hours on the ground at JFK), I learned from a friend that she would have an affordable line, LC Lauren Conrad (once again this is yet another direction that many people are turning too) and if the above is any indication, this is yet another great line that has her written all over it. I love great basics that can travel with you and yet you can mix it in with various styles and price points. If you love layering and bringing a sense of California style to wherever you're heading, this line is for you. She definitely gets it and understand how people want to look and this way of dressing is conducive to various body types, heights etc. I am a full believer in a style that comes off as effortless and yet, you look you have had a stylist assist you in striking the right balance. I know this is something that I teach my clients and love seeing it represented here. Available at Kohl's and their .com, you'll have no problem finding items that will find themselves in your shopping bag or cart!

Wearable Wednesdays: LAGOON ~ Keep it Ruched & Simple

Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest ones. You'll find you get more compliments and it took you much less time than the outfits that you labor over for hours. So when it comes to going out and picking up a few great pieces with no idea in mind, I always head out to Forever 21 and if the lines are too much, I go online! I love this Ruched Cami because it would look fab with skinny jeans and a great pair of heels. Love the fact that it's not pricey but that I can pair it with pieces from my collection, Kitten Couture and a cuff from my designer friend Ted Rossi. The possibilities are truly endless! Take a peek at some great finds whether it's popping in new colors or new looks for a truly great price.
