Trendy Thursdays: Events ~ Scent of Departure

Last week, I had the opportunity to pop into Scents of Departure event hosted by Christine of Tineey at Henri Bendel! Immediately, I understood that there were a number of scents that either embodied or were inspired by a city. These airport coded fragrances have amazing descriptions; however, I realized that there was an awesome quiz that I could take that would select the fragrance that was for me! What a great idea as I wasn't sure how I would be able to smell everything. After taking an interesting personality based quiz, I was told that I was London (LHR)! Apparently Miami and LA were close runners ups! With such fragrances as Dubai, Tokyo, NYC and more - you're bound to find whatever place is your home in your heart! Seeing that I run through so many cities and feel that I know a number of airport codes off the top of my head - this is perfect for the jetsetter. I love that they had a great window shopping location but going forward, they will have moved to the fragrance section on the second floor.

Trendy Thursdays ~ Hair Travel

I travel a lot and many times, when I land, by the time I get through customs, the airport etc I am scheduled to be somewhere with just a smidge of time to get in my room, unpack everything to perfection, hop into the shower and to get out of my travel clothes. I need my go to looks no matter what and to ensure that I look fab. Just like I have go to outfits, I love go to items that allow me to quickly get through getting ready while having many of the items that I use at home. Hair is much more then prepping it when you're about to head out the door. It's one of those items that you have to infuse (whatever your treatment routine is). I have to say that I love Ted Gibson as he has a phenom system of products that you can use whether you have been to his salon or haven't. I'm a huge fan of his shampoos which are perfect for whatever color you're rocking as there is one that is available for red heads, brunettes and blondes! In this particular Ted Gibson Travel Essential Kit, this is for the jetsetter who wants to ensure that the care you receive at home continues when you're out and about to wherever your destination will take you! It includes 2 oz travel sizes (TSA friendly) of daily cleanse ®, daily nourish®, beautiful hold® and 3 hairsheet styling® sheets. In addition to this kit, I'm loving that I recently became introduced to Shea Butter Curl Oils by Alaffia which is available in various textures and scents - this is perfect for those that rock waves and curls! Regardless of your texture, these oils hydrate and soften strands, strengthen hair and fight split ends, adds shine, improves scalp health and there are no harsh or heavy ingredients. This multipurpose solution allows you to put it directly on hair whether it is wet or dry and then you can also use it as a scalp conditioner which is always nice to do to ensure the health of your hair. Fine Hair can enjoy Shea Butter & Rosemary Shining Curl Oil, Thick Dry or Coarse Hair can use Shea Butter & Coconut Hydrating Curl Oil and Baby Curls/Chemically Treated Hair can have Shea Butter & Neem Nourishing Curl Oil.

In addition to nurturing your hair, like any look, hair loves to be accessorized. The trend over the past few seasons within 2011 has been a mix of boho chic style which allows hair to be loose and just do its own thing; however, ensuring that your hair is pulled away from your face whether it's a clip or ponytail is important too! I love the feather trend as it's an unexpected pop of something. I also love Dauphines of New York's the One Headband which can be worn with your hair down Grecian style or pulled back to allow that bun to have a new life! Whatever you do, your hair is the highlight and one of the first things that your eyes are drawn to - so definitely ensure that you have what you need.

Trendy Thursdays ~ Beautify On the Run

Whether I'm heading to the airport for business or fun or simply am going to a wedding for the weekend, I find that up until the last minute, I use every second to continue tweaking my beauty look. Rarely do I land or arrive and head to the hotel to rest - I may have enough time to do a super quick spruce and I'm on a series of agendas! With that said, my carry on bag always has some last minute items that I can do that works while I focus on something else OR I can do it while I am in the car service, on the train, in the cab or am on the runway. I love large roomy bags with pockets so all my tech, items to pass the time away and more can fit so this bag by Lauren by Ralph Lauren is perfect! When I travel I have to be comfy (no restricting clothes) but also ensuring that the AC doesn't get too crazy so the dress by Malene Birger is such a great find and can be dressed up and down for 90% of the things that I need to do when I hit the ground running.

People always comment on my super white smile and it looks that amazing because I use Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips which provides professional level whitening in the comfort of your home; moreover, when I use it with Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste I'm ensuring that my smile is protected. So no matter how much fun I am going to have in the last weekends of summer this is apart of my daily routine and I like whitening knowing that I can still talk on the phone, sip something etc and the strips are at work. Of course, many of you know that I am a Brand Ambassador for this product but you've all seen me on HSN, spontaneous photoshoots at events and my shoots with major magazines and although I receive the product courtesy of the brand, my pearly whites are definitely a testament to the time investment of using them! My lips are another huge thing - a fab smile has to meet lush lips and ever since my Dior Beauty event I hosted this past summer, you can't find me without my Lip Maximizer (which plumps them) and my Lip Glow (which gives them a lush look and a slight tint that my body naturally creates) both by Dior and yes I am addicted!

Ever since last week, I have been loving Caudalie's Beauty Elixir which can be used after you wash your face or even when you are fully made up. It's travel friendly AND I love how refreshed I feel when I spray it on my face. It's a soothing mini spa that is always at the ready. Finally, I think carrying wipes are a must especially when the temperatures spike - you always want to feel clean so having Ole Henriksen's Truth to Go will ensure that you're fresh, dewy and dry! These have been my basic go to's whether it's been over the past year or within the past few weeks and as always, I have more items that I love bringing with me but I love looping you in on my fave things!

Swoonfest Saturdays ~ Pack It Up!

Whether you do a lot of travel or you are simply grabbing items as you head out the door, I have some phenom essentials. The day before any trip is hectic for me, tomorrow I'm jetting off to "the beautiful Dominican Republic" which is said by every stewardess as we are moments from landing. Although I hear the weather has been rainy in Santo Domingo, I'm hoping that Sun is gorge since it's the only day I won't be working as the factory is closed. Then Mon - Wed, I will be designing my Kimmie Smith x Sebago Fall 12 collection (my third collection with them). I was just there in May designing my Spring 12! As you know, I travel each month whether it's heading to do another segment on HSN, a press trip, designing shoes and meeting with my brands so I have my system down to a science! With that said, I will pack my bags today but I always have last minute packing that goes into my large purse.

Earlier this week, I attended the holiday show and fell in love with Lug Life is all about keeping you organized for the day, overnight, in fitness, for moms and when traveling. They have a phenom Clipper Flat Iron Case which allows you to curl your hair and slip it in one of many color cases so that it can cool and that it can leave with you without you worrying about waiting for it to cool down. You only have precious minutes before your car service gets a little testy that you're delayed! Of course I have many cosmetic bags and many do go in my luggage as typically, I carry it on the plane but I always have the items that I use that morning in my bag. I'm loving Bottega Veneta's cosmetic case which is luxe and so essential as I do my perfected eye and head out the door. I carry Rebecca Minkoff with my everyday whether it's her fab key python studded case (love), her matching iPad cover (LOVE) and when I travel I always have her MAC bag in my luggage! But I also love her Lunch Money Pouch which is cute but I put a few extra dollars in here to give out tips as I'm going in and out of airports, hotels and when I am buying my guilty pleasures (Life & Style, Us Weekly etc). Finally, as an Accessories Expert, you know it's always about my bags and everything goes into something luscious. My bag of the moment, it's got to be about MJ! I wear his oversized sunglasses in a number of hues and I have always been about Marc Jacobs bags as well - this is a bit bling with the accessory on the bag, the textured patent leather and the fact that all this and more can be stored in here as I make my way to the car to head to Terminal 5!

Trendy Thursdays: Project Detox ~ Staging Moments

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we prepped with her for the trip and today, we're at the first stop! Thankfully, Keren will share her journey which will provide a little insight into our needs of finding our equilibrium.

For this full-time working mom that lacks sunshine, serenity and nature, a jolt back to equilibrium begins with detoxing from the jungles of NYC into the warm soothing arms of the Sonoran Dessert.

Sunshine. Straight up for me please. Dry. No olives.

And ‘according to the Tucson locals’, I was actually in the sunniest state in the U.S. (& one of the sunniest places on earth)…. Sorry Florida I love ya dearly & I know you have Sunshine State plastered on your drivers licenses but I did get the gossip on how Arizona really outsunned you but let you keep the title ‘Sunshine State’ back in the 70’s since they had the Grand Canyon as one of the world’s natural wonder’s to boast (& of course the added bonus title of ‘Copper State’ for their mineral wealth).

Their proof they claim is in the Biosphere.

As in, the choice to build the famed Biosphere 2 in Arizona because it most resembled outer space (ala’ lots of sunshine!) . Biosphere 2 is a glass dome which contains the largest closed man-made ecosystem ever created in order to study the interactions between humans, farming and technology with the rest of nature and to explore the possibility of humans living in one of these in space – talk about a destination spa fit for Jane Jetson, I’d love to go there!). And yes, this Biosphere is the place George Costanza referred to on Seinfeld when he lied and said “Elaine has been chosen to represent the Upper West Side in the next Biosphere project”.

Stepping out of Tucson Airport into the bright early morning sun was more like stepping in to a detoxifying sauna. You instantly feel your body melt away the stress in the dry desert heat.

This is the moment when you close your eyes and take it all in. (..and I mean Really close your eyes as you don’t have to keep one eye open to watch over your lil one!!)

The solitude. The heat. The stillness. The scent (gosh that clean scent! of mesquite, cactus, sun, rain, flora).

When I opened my eyes, I was standing in front of a very rare & beautiful sight: The flower bloom of the Organ Pipe Cactus situated right at the airport taxi station. This cactus blooms only at night and once a year but I was able to see it! Not only was it early morning and the flower didn’t close yet from the night but since it has many buds that open up on different days between May and July there is a span of a few shorts weeks out of the year where you can catch a glimpse of one of the buds blooming at the tip of the cactus’ arm.

It was one of those moments.

Now that I am back home to my busy urban life I infuse that detoxifying moment into my every day by simply lighting my Cactus Cream Travel Candle, closing my eyes and allowing the heat and scent transport me to Tucson.

Staging moments in a tin can.
