Swoonfest Saturdays ~ I'm All About Cheese

This past Thursday, I headed to Murray's Cheese with Paul's mom as we were going to learn about AND make mozzarella cheese! The one thing that most people know about me if we're eating or about to eat - but I love cheese. It doesn't matter what it is and any situation is that much better when it is in front of me!

I suggest taking this course as we had a number of cheeses served on a slate (which you can write on as it comes with chalk), we sipped various wines as we learned and then the best part was actually learning how to make it. When I say it is the simplest thing ever - this is not an understatement. Last night I whipped up the other half of the cheese and Paul was happily nibbling it! To start off, mozzarella is curd which you can order from Caputo Brothers Creamery (conicidently, one of the owners - a super nice lady sells as well as makes this cheese - the name comes from her sons as they are brothers), then you need a bowl of cold water to put the mozzarella in once you have made the balls and another bowl which you will put hot water in! Check out the gallery of images to see how I made it at home and check out the videos which gives you a little more history. If you opt to stay out of the cheese making business, just go to Murrary's and buy a number of cheeses and meats (which we also did).

Wearable Wednesdays: His Style ~ Cold Weather Mix

Um, all I can say about yesterday's weather is - brrrr! How can it be that we have had phenom weather over the past few weeks and now we got a sudden burst of chilliness in the air! Today, we want to make sure that His Style reflects the need for cold weather accessories to brave the temperatures that will soon be the norm as we make our way in and out! I'm loving that we start with a down coat (loving that I just got one a few weeks ago that has come in handy) by Paul Smith. This coat has that great grey distressed hue and a wool with leather detail. This ensures that when you pop your color, you get to have this fab flare. I'm a firm believer in protecting your eyes by wearing sunglasses when you're outside. Rock this pair of Mosley Tribes to bring out your inner aviator. This dual grey color scarf by D & G will keep his neck warm and looking glam no matter where he happens to be. I'm also loving that his hands can still maneuver his smartphone thanks to Echo Design which has fab innovations that allows you to glide your finger across the screen. Rag and Bone has one of my favorite pairs of boots for men that mixed fab leather with a grey wool in the side panels on this cap toed shoe. Finally, he can lug all his necessities around with the Aidan Carry All Tote by UGG Australia. Together, his cold weather look will definitely ensure a double take.

Fashionable Fridays ~ Looking Fabrrlous

OMG it was super cold outside earlier today and by the end of the day, it was even colder! So now that we are in this season, how do we arm ourselves against it? Start off with this Raquel Allegra tank which is distressed, paired over Adriano Goldschmied Sateen jeggings! Wrap yourself in this fabulously warm Day Birger Et Mikkelsen chunky cardigan (which is an essential part of outfitting. As always, we need to rock fab accessories. I'm loving this equally chunky Sandra Dini musk quartz and diamond ring and this Chan Luu semi precious agate slice necklace! Finally, we need to ensure that our feet stay warm and I'm loving LISKA's raccoon fur boot which looks amazing and caps off this look wherever you're heading!

Trendy Thursdays ~ Turkish Fresh & Clean

Back in March, I concluded the fun of coming off a series of long weeks that involved NY Fashion Week in Feb, Capsule (trade show) for the launch of my Kimmie Smith x Sebago Fall 11/Holiday 11 Collection to wholesalers, my first appearances on HSN and SXSW - to relax and go to the historic Russian and Turkish Baths in the Village thanks to Spa Week! Now you can click that link and read about my experiences but the biggest take away was that this was definitely a rustic, no frills but amazing experience when done downtown! I also learned that unlike most spa treatments where you're under towels and can disrobe completely, you may not want to do so when getting a Turkish style treatment and oh yes, there is a lot of water and exfoliating involved!

As many of you know, I am one of the Curator's for Aha Life and with that comes providing decadent finds to you and parties and special events for me. I attended a pre Spa Week Party kick off that took place at the decadent Trump Soho Spa that is located in the hotel. What a fun night of henna tattoos, mini treatments and mingling! Last month, I received an email about a complimentary Turkish Hammam and realizing that I was coming off of yet another serious of chaotic events involving co-hosting a Bloomingdales x Lucky Magazine x Dior Event, going back on HSN for a second time and ending all of it with being in Dominican Republic to create my Kimmie Smith x Sebago Fall 12 line, this would be AMAZING!

With my appointment made as soon as I got back, this past Mon I came (with bikini in hand - they do have disposable panties if you prefer) and enjoyed all that is Trump! The Turkish Hammam room is gorgeous as you lay on a marble table and the entire room is covered in mosaics of various hues. You constantly hear running water as the treatment involves you laying on the heated table, getting washed with very warm water multiple times (note that if you don't want to get your hair completely wet that you should let them know so that they can try to cover it but it will get a bit wet) and an exfoliating mitt is used all over your body (you do get to keep it but note it should only be used once to twice a week as it is very coarse). With so much heat all over you, bring a water bottle - I loved it and you can feel your body reacting to all of the stimulus around you. When you have been cleaned in every way possible your body temperature is brought back down in layers of cooler and finally COLDER water. This treatment is about exfoliating and not so much about massaging and it is one that I would definitely do once a month and know that I will be doing once Fashion Week is over. I think that I would actually do this and then go straight into a massage. There is also a Moroccan version which involves everything I described with a clay/mud. After so much attention to my body, I hung out in their Relaxation Room which allowed me to sample some phenomenal teas, read a magazine and just recover and enjoy the cool air. In addition, I could have went out on the deck and enjoyed sitting out there as well. It was definitely a fab treatment and one that I would suggest to anyone who wants to revitalize the skin and just to ensure that all those layers are no longer there!

Fashionable Fridays ~ Cozy Up

Can you believe how quick this week has flown? There are tons of great looks that you can rock when we continue to go into the cold weather. You know my staple look is to wear a cute tunic as well as a great pair of leggings. To stay warm, I think that it's also essential to have a cozy cardigan to get you through the long days ahead. Now to feel that you have a pop of color out and about on your arm as you begin to look at all the holiday windows, get a cute bag that has a rich hue! What do you wear when it's time to go out and stay cozy with a cup of coffee in your hands!

Treasure Tuesdays ~ Wishing For Warmth

It's so hard! When the weather starts getting chilly but I'm watching shows like the Hills, I wonder why I couldn't have decided to move to LA as opposed to being in NYC. But then I remember that NY is someplace that I could never be away from and if cold is the tradeoff, then I would need to just deal with it! The good news is, I'm able to travel so I never have to stay in the cold for too long. Thinking of LA makes me remember that I have plans to visit later on this year or as late as Feb and I love the idea of mixing an element of summer with a bit of fall. I'm obsessed with kimono outfits (yesterday I was wearing a kimono top over a pair of jeans) but if I were out an about in LA, I would love this simple Kimono jumper by Joie paired with these booties. I love that they're suede and have a bit of rocker detail. To add to that, the cuff of metal feathers is the perfect compliment and today, I'm including a Mother of Pearl, snail shell, Agate piece from my jewelry line, Kitten Couture!

I could imagine this on a day meeting with showrooms to talk about new collections, meeting with friends, heading out to dinner and more! Just looking at this look makes me want to start planning trips to leave the impending cold! Even if you're not heading anywhere, these are great pieces to begin including within your closet or at the very least, you'll want to click within the spread and check out the fab brands! For those that are fan of Kitten Couture, contact me as I have a special promo that you can use from now to the end of the month to add a little spice into your jewelry collection!

Wearable Wednesdays ~ Everyday Outerwear

When it gets super chilly, I'm not a fan of cold weather; however, I love outerwear for a few reasons. I love coats - if it has to be chilly then it's fun to wear them. Then there are times that you're running around all day and as opposed to your coat being a secondary, it's definitely a primary. The reality is that when you're running from place to place and shopping, you're coat becomes an essential. Recently, I found out about a line that is new to me, Mackage which makes coats for men (my boyfriend is obsessed with Bruce) and women. I love that this a-line coat has a cute neck embellishment. This would be perfect for me to run around to in showrooms, shopping and events. So to that end, it's essential that these looks become accessorized complete with over the knee booths (this is a must when I'm out and about and sometimes it's nice to have a flat boot as opposed to heels). Boots add a bit of an edge look but also a little Paris chic as well. The fingerless gloves are a nice way to add a bit of a rocker chic but when paired with the coat and shoes it's a look that looks like it was super easy to put together and effortless. Finally, it's all about the bag! I'm all about wearing dark colors in the winter but there has to be something which has a pop of color whether it's a scarf or a bag and to me, the bag is essential. This red croc bag is the perfect way to standout and to beat the blahs and greys that can take place once we've been in this weather pattern for too long.

Paul's Honest Meal: Nap Time

Personally, I love nap time. Is there anything better than an afternoon nap on a chilly Saturday afternoon with a heavy blanket, a lightly cracked window and the warmth of Kitten Lounge’s Editor-in-Chief? The answer is no. The problem is that most of our weekend naps usually follow a heavy meal full of the deadliest combination of carbs and protein; in other words, meat and potatoes. The problem is that our bodies have an extremely difficult time digesting such combinations. But, don’t worry help is on the way. Instead of pasta, rice or potatoes a textbook side dish to any protein is taboule (pronounced: tuh-boo-lee).

Taboule is a traditional Middle Eastern wheat salad and is prepared best with The Roots blasting in the background, accompanying the company of the delicious and the healthy. The brain, the source, the transistor radio transmitting the message from the messenger – healthy body equals healthy mind.

So, here is the recipe:

2 cups 100% Whole grain quick cooking Bulgur Wheat

1 ¾ Cups of Boiling Water

3 Cucumbers

3 Black Tomatoes

1 Medium Onion

Dill, Cilantro and Parsley

1 Small head of Garlic

2 Cups of Raisins

Freshly squeezed juice from one Lemon

1 Jalapeno Pepper

Olive Oil

Salt & Pepper

The preparation is simple. Combine 2 cups of bulgur wheat with 1 ¾ cups of boiling water and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Chop the rest of the ingredients, combine with the wheat and season with olive oil, salt and pepper to your taste.

The beauty of taboule is that you can add pretty much any ingredients; from kiwis to mangos. If you are new to cooking, one important note is to make sure to purge the herbs in cold water to get rid of all the sand before chopping. And if your delicious taboule is being accompanied with a piece of delectable fish, I would suggest pairing your dinner with a bottle of La Playa’s Sauvignon Blanc.

Sippin' Saturdays: THINK CITRUS ~ How Do You Take Your Tea

CardewdesignI love cats and when it comes to big cats, I love them too. This post ties in a lot of different items together! First off, the Coffee and Tea Festival is only days away and will be held at the Metropolitan Pavilion! I love that this is going to be a great event that will have the best in coffee, tea and cocoa. Not only can you enjoy warm or chilled beverages, you can also get great products for your drinks. Today's Sippin' Saturday includes this beautiful teapot from Cardew Design, Inc. I love the vibrant orange colors (obviously I am tying this into our THINK CITRUS theme for this month as well) and think that this is really cute and I love the lid with the tiger cub on the top. Definitely visit the site to see a lot more of the interesting canisters, mugs, coasters and tea pots! Of course if you're in NYC, you definitely need to attend the show!

Sippin' Saturdays ~ Bring the Islands To Your Domain

Arar I love when the weather is in the beginning of making that drastic chill that will be here for months. The first few weeks, it's a novelty and that we're all frustrated and begging for spring. In the meantime, it's nice to think about having something to warm you up! I remember the first time I had an opportunity to sample Appleton Estate Rum - I love the rich flavors and after being introduced to Captain Morgan's Rum, I felt that this was a mature step for me. Rum is so much more than something to be mixed with orange juice (not to say that it isn't amazing with orange-mango juice) but there are many ways to enjoy it. Appleton Rum is the official beverage for the month of Dec and we will have a variety of ways that you can enjoy this from a tasty drink to something to serve among friends! You'll have to keep coming back to see but today, I bring you a great beverage you can enjoy after a morning of ice skating at Bryant Park with friends while you decide to go for brunch or just to stay in and tell war stories from work!

I love that this is very simple to make but that the exotic flavors will definitely remind you of every sunny vacation you have ever taken. This is such a rich and welcoming drink that I believe this will be a standby for the season! I also love that you can play around with this as I have. I love Hazlenut coffee and have added this in as to black and have enjoyed it very much so! For the coffee lovers you will enjoy all the variations that are out there!

APPLETON JAMAICAN COFFEE

1 1/2oz Appleton Estate V/X Jamaican Rum

Hot Black Coffee

Whipped Cream

* Pour the Appleton Jamaican Rum into a coffee mug, fill with hot coffee and top with whipped cream.
