Trendy Thursdays ~ Shiseido Event

As I headed over to the Cooper Square Hotel to see the Shiseido presentation, I had no idea what I was in store for but I knew it would be an amazing fall presentation. Upon entering the penthouse, there were a few skincare stations and everything was numbered. I enjoyed walking through each station that integrated a pre-recording of what I was prepping to see, which then allowed me to chat with the appropriate consultants that were staffing the space and then a chance to have the products used on me in terms of makeup. I began the tour learning about their silky Bio Performance Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream and Future Solution LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum and the importance of staying hydrated (and of course staying well rested). Shiseido utilizes many of the Japanese elements that I have come to love when it comes to ensuring that my products have all natural items in it that boost your skin without stripping it.

There was a fab moment during the audio tour that Dick Page, Artistic Director had an amazing video installation that talked about how his love for fab skin and makeup could also be translated into food, shopping, music and so much more. As we ended the skincare portion, I loved learning about the Perfect Foundation Brush that works well whether you are using powder or cream to create that flawless red carpet look that we all want. As I moved into the back of the penthouse, I loved being able to see a number of the hues from light natural tones to those that were more dynamic in eyeshadows! Via the audio tour, Dick Page shares his inspiration behind each hue and I love that by listening to it, I can see exactly what he's describing and how he got there. Above you can see all the shades and I selected 3 of the darker tones - my fave. I selected Patina (11 - an amazing greenish/gold), Tin (14 - a silvery greenish hue) and Caviar (16 - an inky black shimmer that yes was created because he loves caviar). There are other fun hues that are reminiscent of a leather couch, baby doll blues and so much more. What a fun experience!

Swoonfest Saturdays ~ Giorgio Armani Pops of Color

I love looking back at shows that took place earlier in the month for future inspiration. It reminds me of when I was younger and I used to watch CNN's Style Watch to get fashion from around the world, then I was off to dance class and back home to look at Vogue yet again! Many know that I love black and white, when we move into the fall its colors that I embrace fully. This season, I am popping in some other colors to soften my palette if you happened to check my tumblr page a few days ago! I am loving Giorgio Armani's Prive Fall/Winter 2011/2012 recent show where there was nothing but black, white, fuschia and mandarin orange! I am a huge fan of Japanese inspired fashion and this definitely took center stage at the show! Of course I LOVE LOVE LOVE the clutches, headwear and cuffs that rocked out on the runway!

Snazzy Sundays ~ Sleeping Adrift

Anyone that knows me knows that I have had a long time obsession with Anthropologie when it comes to their home section! Of course being a Home Manager once upon a time ago at their Rockefeller Center store only fueled this more! Today, I have included one of my favorite collections in bedding which is Cirrus. Devout followers know that this has been available for a number of years and although the colors may change, I have always loved that grey has been there! You can also incorporate Nimbus into the collection in another hue and I recently came into awareness of Rosetta. Now all of these bedding selections come with shams, pillow cases, sheets, duvets etc but I love that they can be mixed together! Especially this particular look when you're living with your boyfriend as there is just enough whimsy to make it girly but there is a fab color palette that is super neutral and makes you feel relaxed and beachy.

Now a room that you sleep in needs certain requirements which may vary. For us, we opt for not having a TV as our room is for sleeping, relaxing and rejuvenating! I love that we have candles which we light frequently and Volupsa is yet another long term fave that's available at Anthropologie. Finally, we live to stay hydrated and I'm loving this Bubbled Beverage Dispenser. Sure it can be in your kitchen but this is nice to have in your bedroom if you have the space and a gorgeous side table! FIll it with fruits to give you a little kick and chill it during the day so whenever you get thirsty in the night you can take some water out! Finally, I love a decor aesthetic which also incorporates my love for the islands, Japanese and Moroccan elements. The lantern shown above is PHENOM and fits in with a bit of my Moroccan elements.

Mingling Mondays ~ Meet Sabina (Founder, Designer, Sabina Les)

The elegance of glamorous 70's style with bold statement prints
When it's time to relax, we'll find her in Dubai!
Her guilty please includes large amounts of coffee and dark chocolate.
Sabina loves being able to walk around NYC to experiment with different restaurants and food. She loves Japanese and Mexican food!
Sabina, Founder & Designer of Sabina Les

As an Accessories Expert, I'm always sharing my essential accessory picks with everyone and I naturally gravitate towards those that are accessory designers. A few years ago I remember Sabina reaching out to me about her scarves and weeks later, I found myself at the Soho House at a trunk show and happened to meet the designer and her printed scarves without knowing that she would be there! From then on, we'd run into each other, I'd share her trunk shows taking place at Bloomingdale's in Soho or at Henri Bendels! Recently, we were both at a phenomenal event for the book launch of Always in Style which included her scarves within the styling. I'm always happy to see and hear her so above as always, you can find out more about Sabina Les who is bringing back the love of scarves, prints and just a new way to showcase ourselves! Find out her favorite loves and of course we;ll fill in the rest here!

She's a super busy lady and of course you can catch her at her trunk shows in Henri Bendels this month April 20th - 23rd and 27th - 30th! With so much going on, we love that she's as attached to her iPhone as I am with my HTC and like many of us, her next step to stay connected fashionably is to start rocking an iPad (I suggest creating some kind of a case that has the printed scarf look to it). Both her iPhone (and I'm sure iPad) will keep her organized with Evernote, Twitter, Dictation, Solitaire and Sudoku (sometimes organization needs to have some fun in there too).

The success of Sabina Les can't be denied as she is in the Accessories Council and has been featured on the Today Show, Elle and so much more. So of course, I wanted to know what will be coming up for this progressive designer! First off she explained that, "I'd love to see a confident and fashionable woman rocking my scarves. A dynamic woman who appreciates the versatility of a great fashion accessory like any of my scarves." I love knowing that she loves the everyday woman as much as any celeb that is rocking her pieces. In the future, you can expect, "silk cocktail purses and jewelry to the brand. Also, my first introduction into home market with silk printed cushions." Without question, pop into her trunk show and of course start rocking her pieces whether in your outfits or within your home!

If you love finding out about Andrea, make sure that you check out Andrea, founder, designer and artist of Maria Cielo. from last week.

NY Fashion Week F/W 2011: Swoonfest Saturdays ~ Josie Natori

You know that I have loved Natori's collection for a number of years and wore it quite a bit during the holiday season. She is all about color, drapery and movement. With that said, her presentation of her Fall collection was not a disappointment by any stretch of the imagination! Above are two of my favorite looks, those who know my fashion loves know that I am a fan of Japanese inspired looks so to see these pieces, you know that I am already thinking of where this would be perfect to wear! With both having vibrant color this is the perfect item to wear for your next gallery opening or to any special occasion.

Fashionable Fridays ~TY KU Sake, Ming Tsai & Zen Spaces

So this is a multi-layered story for sure! I grew up in Indiana (my mom is from Jersey and my dad is from Ohio) and we ate very typical steak and potato dinners growing up. When I got to college, it was the first time that I ate a number of items that were not served at our dinner table. While I was in college, my love affair for Food Network started. I was introduced to so many things and I remember watching Ming Tsai's East Meets West! I'm not a cook and don't do it a lot but I loved seeing what he created and knew that I had to continue expanding what I ate.

Fast forward to today - I'm a huge fan of Japanese, Chinese, Moroccan, Indian cuisines and more! Last week we kicked off Oct with a post about National Sake Day which featured TY KU Sake and this week I ended up being invited to an amazing zen space where I would not only try a selection of their beverages but we would also eat an east meets west menu that was prepared by none other than Ming Tsai! To know that he is also from the midwest, is the chef/owner of Blue Ginger, has his show Simply Ming and has designed a variety of items that you can use in the kitchen and are eco friendly AND is battling to be The Next Iron Chef - I was beyond thrilled for this event.

I enjoyed sipping TY KU Sake which is a Super Premium Junmai Ginjo sake (black bottle) which is perfect to eat with anything and is not just meant for sushi! It has such a smooth finish and is amazing when chilled! I also fell in love with Ultra Premium Junmai Daiginjo sake (white bottle) which is like a celebration beverage. I could definitely imagine drinking this for a special occasion and it is something to enjoy when you're super relaxed or amongst friends. There were also mixed cocktails such as the Upside Down Pineapple Sake Martini - which was beyond decadent. Mojitos were also made from TY KU's liqueur. As we enjoyed the beverages I loved having the oysters which had sake in them, pork dumplings, veggie sushi rolls and then these amazing flattened shrimps.

The setting complimented the food as we were in a gorgeous penthouse that had artifacts and Buddhas everywhere you looked. Everyone was able to mingle and catch up and to enjoy the pairings of the cocktails and the food. At the end of the night, Ming came out and chatted with everyone and to hear his energy and to tell us how he came up with flattened shrimp that we all enjoyed was a great way to see how to turn a possibly bad situation into an amazing one. Apparently, he was making shrimp and it wasn't heating up a certain way but when he flattened it, it worked out and then it became an amazing dish - with the oysters and shrimp alone, I could eat that everyday! I also love that he made us drinks as well and spent time chatting with each of us which was another highlight from the night!

Snazzy Sundays: Plant One On

There's no excuse for not bringing in nature to your home! I love that no matter whether you live on 5 acres or in a shoe box, you can always add plants! Living in Long Beach, LI, I love that the beach is seconds away but being from the Midwest, I love knowing that there are trees nearby. I love bonsai and I love bamboo! Eastern Leaf is one of my favorite sites as they sell everything that you see in the spread and more. Not only is it reasonably priced but they have various sizes which work for whatever you're trying to add to your home. Over the next few weeks, you'll find out what I'm buying for my home as I'm in the midst of some sprucing and since I'm going for a Japanese vibe, why not start with my plants? If you want more of a floral look, check our the Cymbidium Else in a fab yellow and if you're looking for your own space of zen, the Curly Willow is a great choice as well. All the links above can be clicked on and I can definitely vouch that these are perfect for your home as I have given these as gifts and will now start to pick out my own pieces for the home! Also stay tuned as I start to show pics of my home transforming itself into an awesome oasis.

Snazzy Sundays: We Need a Bookcase

Ah moving in with your Food Editor who also has quite an eye for design means that I don't have complete say so on what goes within our space! I love that we agree and disagree and we are definitely learning. So we have an interesting space that is upstairs and downstairs. We decided that upstairs, which is our living space, will be very Japanese like. Our bed is a beautiful platform  bed that is known as Espresso in color. This is great since I love that the wood is black with a hint of brown but I find it difficult to find additonal wooden pieces. We also have gorgeous wood floors that are more a of a cherry stain so the problems continue. We need a bookcase badly and probably a few as we are piling up on books and interesting items. But what to get? Below are some shelves that I am thinking of and believe that this can add to our theme! This weekend we went to Pearl River and we bought our first sake set!

Wearable Wednesdays ~ Don't Delay with Your Halloween Plans

Now that Fashion Week is no longer a priority, I start to think about the rest of the year. With my birthday being last Fri, it always marks the middle of the month for me. It then makes me think about the fact that there are only three full months left and most of it becomes VERY holiday oriented. My sister was born on Halloween, so it's always important for me to think about what I will wear to her parties! This year she is reflecting back to her days at Duke where she enjoyed "Headmaster and Mistress Parties". When I was in college at IU, we never has a huge thing about having a theme but every weekend my sister seemed to go another themed event and this was one of my favorites. So I knew that I would be in a cute school girl outfit and my boyfriend would have to look like a professor or something like that. Around this time, Yandy.com which is known for their variety of costumes let me know that it was never too early to think about Halloween.

Ever since I have been in NYC, Halloween is never complete without standing in line at Ricky's days before the big party; however, this year I vowed that I wouldn't do this. I would have my costumes and then I could spend more time accessorizing them! So within today's gallery you can see my images and as I go to the parties, of course, you will see me in them. This year I will be Sexy Dorothy, a Geisha Doll and also Sexy Schoolgirl. What a great combo and it's nice to dress differently to each function that I will attend.

The good thing is that we can all enjoy these costumes by visiting Yandy and seeing what looks best. Each day, there are new items being added and they have great accessories such as shoes and more to make sure that you fully get into character. What are you going as for Halloween? Do you have favorite places? I will continue to do a weekly post sharing about where you can go and various discounts that are out there - stay tuned!

Paul's Honest Meal: Brook - My Secret Lover

So, it’s Saturday morning, you wake up in your moderately priced Brooklyn Heights apartment, your dog is pacing next to your bed, your girlfriend is at the breakfast bar working on her obnoxiously thin laptop and the only thing on your mind is Brook – your secret lover. You welcome the sunshine, as you slowly pull the blankets away from your face and a breath of crisp fresh air brings in a brand new day and a brand new hunger. You throw on your jeans, you grab your flip flops and you are off to walking your dog along the promenade. As the other pet enthusiasts are captivated with their canine friends, you begin to formulate a plan; a plan to catch a glimpse of your secret lover.

Your unsuspecting girlfriend is excited to spend this perfect day with a blanket, a cooler and a couple of ipods at what appears to be the perfect destination – Long  Beach, NY. You pack your things, you grab a couple of chai tea lattés and you are ecstatic to get a seat on the LIRR along with fellow pale urbanite staycationers. Your girlfriend thinks that it might be the caffeine that’s keeping you awake, but little does she know that it’s the memory of Brook that has your mind in overdrive unwilling to relinquish its hold until the very moment you get that final glimpse. As you are welcomed to the beach with the conductor’s friendly reminder that you have reached the final stop, you suggest a slightly different route to the beach with the promise of an earlier arrival. And there it is your lover’s secret lair – the Nagahama.

Long story short, do your self a favor and forget about every sushi place that you have been to anywhere within the five boroughs, buy a LIRR ticket, spend a day at the beach and finish it off with a delicious meal at the Nagahama sushi restaurant on 169 Park Avenue in Long Beach, NY. The fish is always extremely fresh (which I feel should be the number one criteria of any great sushi restaurant), the rolls are generous and the menu boasts enough variety to satisfy the most discerning of pallets. This is not the place for suits or khaki pants, but it is your final destination for mouth-watering sushi. And as for Brook, don’t forget about my girl, you can always find her along with other delectable house specialty rolls waiting for your arrival and ready to service your pallet with the most complete array of flavors.

On a side note, let go of your inhibitions and try the unfiltered sake. You will be thankful for the milky unassuming beverage and indulged with the finishing touch of a thinly sliced cucumber in your glass.

Mingling Mondays ~ Omido

Omido1 Last Monday I had the opportunity to go to a press opening of Omido. Of course openings and functions are only fun when you bring a friend along to sample and taste. Omido is a very cute and chic Japanese restaurant. I love the sushi and I also loved the drinks. I love the intimate vibe of this restaurant. Located in the theater district, I could see how this restaurant could be over run with tourists; however, it seems like it's in a tucked away place so it is definitely a gem that you should keep your eye on.
Regardless of what day you choose to go, this wood oriented location reminds you of a spa and the music definitely kept a positive vibe going. You also have the opportunity to rent out an area which is perfect for a birthday party. I love the idea of the little slips of fortune cookies papers that are attached to the ceiling which makes you feel like your in a special area.

That being said, I enjoyed the sushi - being a fan of yellowtail I liked this piece the best (my second favorite was the spicy tuna). As far as cocktails, I enjoyed the Sake infused beverages. Surprisingly, dessert was my favorite portion of the meal (this coming from someone who tends to never have this) I really enjoyed the Mango Parfaits which were absolutely amazing - thankfully the waiter saved us some. I loved the presentation! This is definitely somewhere that I could see stopping in for drinks although I would think that it would get crowded quickly.
