Today is Saturday, November 7, 2009
Timbaland knows how to make a hit record and now you have the ability to have professional quality music that you can create at your fingertips! Beaterator, created by Rockstar Games, hit the shelves last month and is available to use on your PSP now and will be available on your iPhone and iTouch as well! Now you have a way to create your own beats and to include your vocals whether it's fun amongst your friends or you're trying to put together a song for the studios. Watch the video and once your song is created, you can export and share with your friends!
After a day of running around Home Depot (more on that tomorrow), it was nice to go to Bracco's in Freeport to enjoy drinks, oysters and to hear great music! This is a fun place to pass the afternoon while you decide what you would love to do for the rest of the evening! After 3 hours we listened to a solo artist and then a Jamaican band - both were great choices.
When the weather is perfect, you find reasons to be out and about with friends. With many people working various hours, it's fun to reconnect with those you work with or never see at some type of an event or a regular hangout. The 1st Annual Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival takes place every Tuesday through August 11th and is not only a great time to hang out, but from 5 - 7pm, you can enjoy music, bbq and of course wine that is brought to you by City Winery. It's a fun block party that you can always head out to before you head home or continue the night! Take some time to check out who will be performing each week and note that other vendors will be at this event as well so you'll want to check them out as well!
I remember the early days of growing up by shows. I loved Wonder Woman - you would find me running around with a towel around my neck and clanging my wrists together watching my favorite super hero getting the bad guy and looking fabulous. She was my walking talking Barbie doll who could do anything and be anywhere. Then you had my other two loves Charlie's Angels and Michael Jackson!
Forget about the fact that Farrah Fawcett was only in one season of Charlie's Angel's! I loved that she had that California girl next door quality. She was beautiful and yet it didn't go to her head - don't even get me started on her hair and the easy going smile! It was through her that I loved the idea of looking very put together and yet having that windswept look. Women to this day run to get that hair and easy sense of style. She will be missed and it's sad to know that I heard her pass yesterday morning!
Twitter was full of activity as a huge icon passed last night! 50 years old and with a tour in the works (I even read that he was working on a move that would eclipse the moonwalk or even his gravity defining lean) - Michael Jackson passed away. I'm from Indiana as is Michael and just to be clear, I am only speaking of him as an entertainer and performer - he was the best! He sang, he created mini movies with his videos and knew how to be true to his style even as it changed around him with the increase of rap, alternative and hip-hop! MTV gained a lot of their audience base from his "World Premier Videos". Yet, he continues to make these videos that everyone would crowd around the tv to watch as it premiered on MTV (although earlier in the day they would play videos about how fans loved him, previous material and more). He taught me a lot! It doesn't matter where you come from but if you have a gift, it can be shared and you don't have to work it into what the trend is - be your own trend. When it came to fashion, Michael, yet again had his own take. Who else could wear socks where everyone knew he had very white ones that his pants didn't cover? He made the arm band chic and yet added an element of military to it - what exactly was he fighting against? He made sequins cool and he knew that the right jacket - oh yes the Thriller jacket - could set off an entire look (I remember going to school with a kid with a Gizmo backpack and a Thriller jacket - he was the coolest of the cool in first grade). I sat at home with my View Finder flipping through the scenes of Thriller and always freaking out when I got to the part where he was the werewolf! But he knew about the power of theme and accessories! Whether he rocked black and white, a cool hat or a sequined glove, people rocked the style.
With so many performers that tip their hat to Michael, he will never be forgotten. His body of work will continue on with songs that continue to be relevant and placed in a period of time where we all suspended our disbelief! Farrah will continue to be known as that girl from next door who had just the right mix of sexy, cool and spunk that you would want as a bestie and at the same time as the crush that if you got up enough courage would say yes! RIP to two icons that exist within and outside of their generation!
So this weekend is a collegiate mamoth of activities! Little 500, which takes place at Indiana University (my university), is known as a good time which includes a bike race, tons of parties and great music! Since graduating, I try to go to as many of the Little 500's as I can and although today's weather in NYC is amazing, I am bummed not to be back in Bloomington for many reasons! One of them being the band that will be playing there this weekend (it may be tonight or it could have happened last night). Every Little 500 weekend, there is a huge act that plays. This year it's Soulja Boy and of course, someone opens the show! Via an insider at one of my favorite PR firms in the city (that I'm fortunate to not only work with but enjoy building a great friendship), she told me about Josh Cocktail and Danny Schwartz - who will be opening during this year's concert which is unofficially known as Rap n Roll! So today I am letting you guys know about this amazing group and I am sending them virtual love and kudos as they are truly amazing!!! I know that this song is untitled although they shoudl call it "Another Show" - can I just say that I have played this 20 this morning and the song is stuck in my head?
You guys have heard me talk about Paper Doll earlier last year. I love that this spunky band definitely reminds me of No Doubt and other bands that have great guys that are lead by a strong female leader. If you have yet to go to a show or (gasp) haven't heard of them, check out their fun video , Anything at All, which is not only relaxing but a great song to listen to when you're relaxing over the weekend whether it's reading the paper or sipping a glass of wine. Enjoy the video and then read an earlier post about this band to find out a few more details! Follow my blog with bloglovin´
I love a great find and there is nothing like sharing it with others! This week I have a lot of goodies to share with you and I am kicking iit off with the Fundraising in Style. Being a designer myself, I love supporting those who put themselves out there and with 10% of the proceeds of your purchases going to support music, art and more - your affordable splurges will go far in maintaining those who wish to remain creative! Take a peek and I hope to see you there this Thursday!
This morning, I got up with a huge agenda of things to do and of course, I needed some music to set the mood. Via Twitter, I had the opportunity to meet @KevinWhalum who has an amazing jazz sound that's great to wake up to, work with and more. Of course, he is available on iTunes but you can also visit Kevin Whalum, to learn more about him! His new CD, One Life to Live has so many great songs on it! I love his rendition of 'How Sweet It Is To be Loved By You' and I also love 'I'm In Love'. It's great music that's easy to listen to and definitely sets the mood! Take some time to check it out and let me know your thoughts!
A few weeks ago, I received an email about Valslist and for those that know me, sometimes I get a little behind on my responses. Fueled by my new iPod, I wanted to put new music on there but sometimes, I have no idea and then I thought about Valslist! The beauty of this list is that Val, the creator of this list, created a site that optimizes your iTunes player. Whether you have no idea what you're looking for or you're thinking of themes, Val has you covered with multiple playlists to fit your need. In addition, you're able to find out about upcoming shows and to learn about new groups and what their sound is similar to in regards to groups that you may know! I suggest using this when you're loading your iPod or when you're giving an iPod as a gift. I am giving my mom an iPod this year and I have decided to load it up with a few items per the suggestions of Valslist. For me, I enjoy having a filter of items that can direct me to the best music while allowing me to still use the platform that I prefer, iTunes. As you click various links, you find that listening to music and paying for it comes back into iTunes! Take some time to check it out and if you're in Chicago, there seem to be a lot of shows in your area that you could check out!
Now if you have been following me on Twitter, you'll hear me saying that I am watching The Hills online as I am usually missing it due to football. One of the things that I love about this show is that I have found myself heading to iTunes after watching the show! It seems like The Hills always has a great song and even though you only hear a little of it, it makes you want to hear more! With that said, I was introduced to the Universal Motown's, modern rock band,Safetysuit's "Someone Like You", which has a great vibe and great lyrics to match. Although their first CD, Life Left to Go was released in May, this band has been on a mini tour making pit stops to continue increasing their audience. Although they have been playing with Puddle of Mud since the earlier portion of this month, this band got its start by coming together and focusing on their audience via grassroots methods - playing small venues and starting in their home base of Nashville. After listening to all the songs from their current CD, I have to say that the lyrics are simple, touching and just great to listen to. With so much talent coming from Nashville, it's nice to hear another band that has made it from the area with their great sound. To listen to other great songs, you can visit Safetysuit's site!
Ah the Christmas Albums, the other week I talked about Sheryl Crow and today I bring you Amy Grant! When I think about the holiday CDs, I do think of Amy Grant as she has made previous CDs within this genre. This CD is actually a best of holiday collection with four additional songs that have been added! If you have been collecting her music for years, you'll enjoy new song and if you have yet to include her within your collection, you'll love seeing what everyone has come to love about her gift. I love the fact that Amy comes back with her 25 year career to bring her spin on Christmas songs! Take some time to check out some of her songs and also visit her website to learn more about what Amy is up to.
This morning Sippin Saturday is up a bit late as we are removing our old bed and bringing in our new one. So to assist with this change, we decided to listen to something new and I came across Manze Dayila and the Nago Nation who does World, Afro-Beat and Reggae! For a quick introduction, you can go here and then to learn a lot more and to see a very interesting website, you can go to her home. I love the use of all the instruments throughout her songs. Manze can be compared to a number of people but most closely to Nina Simone her voice is one of authority and an intense need to share her messages. Arriving to this country at the age of 19 from Haiti to Miami Beach and years later she would be discovered in a NY subway station singing.
I love the fact that she has such a distinct sound and as I sit and watch people putting our new platform bed together, it creates a very chill vibe around the condo and is also very inspirational. Definitely check out more about Manze Dayila and her bandmates!
I grew up loving music, although I never played an instrument and barley sang, I was fortunate to grow up in a family of those who sang and to have a signed artist that taught me the value of various forms of music. When I listen to a song, I really listen for what I like to call "the goosebump moments". This is when you hear a voice that is distinct, lyrics that take your emotions to another level and being able to get to know about the artist and how they set themselves apart from others. IreneB has these qualities and more and is the reason why I love keeping an ear to new sounds especially those that are independents who you know that they will make a strong impact in the industry.
This singer/songwriter hails from Barcelona and as she prepares to launch her first CD "Metamorphosis" in her new home, Orlando, she has already accomplished so much on her journey. Her journey began with a love of R&B which was cultivated as she studied music for 7 years and then put her knowledge into practice as she graced various stages. Not only has her single "Forgive Me Now" played online and in radio stations internationally, this marks the first English R&B CD that was created from a Spanish native and distributed worlwide! Being someone who used to do PR for digital artists, I really love how her music has been included with quite a few podcasts!
The single is powerful not only due to IreneB's voice which reminded me of Tony Braxton and Christina Aguilera but her skills as a songwriter is evident as she sings asking for fogiveness in order to move forward. From the very first words, you're brought into the song and carried through with amazing melodies. IreneB's talent is undeniable; however, she knows how to pick a great team that is no stranger to working with the best of the best. Frankie Biggz has worked with such notables as Chrisina Aguilera, 50 Cent, Kanye West and much more! With his magical touch, I am excited to see where he will take IreneB. Available on iTunes this song has such a catchy beat and lyrics, that you will find yourself pressing repeat on your iPod. Also listen to the snippet (the button is right about the singers/songwriter's picture) that is available here on Kitten Lounge, then check out IreneB's Myspace page to stay in touch with where you can find her next and hopefully, we will be able to bring you news on where she will appear next!
You know next weekend looks good when you are currently sitting in a weekend thinking about the next one coming up. Yes I am pleased to attend a special shopping event next Fri but I can't lie that it's going to be fun to go to PaperDoll's concert in the West Village next Saturday night. I think this calls for those special skinny jeans, a cute shirt, clucth and all the python accessories that I can find! Seriously, I began chatting it up with the lead singer of PaperDoll and after visiting their main home and MySpace page, I knew that this was something that I would always want playing on my iPod.
PaperDoll has not only been making the circuit but they have played to sold out shows at Knitting Factory, Crash Mansion and Mercury Lounge. With the release of the their debut album, Ballad Nerd Pop, this pop rock band embraces its listeners with great melodies, catchy tunes and just the feeling of excitement about their own music. I am a huge fan of the 80's sound and my favorite song is definitely, "Everything is Fine" which has a great sound and gets you ready to prepare for a night out or you may already be out enjoying a night with the girls or your growing group of friends.
Most importantly, I see Teresa as that early Gwen Stefani during the No Doubt days. I think she has a great style and definitely makes her look her own while taking ownership of her lyrics. OIf you have yet to hear this band, you can hear them next Sat! I hope to continue following this band on Kitten Lounge. as you know that I enjoy sharing indie music and I will be out next weekend catching my first (and hopefully not the last) show. I will also share my thoughts on the show as well.
I am such a fan of music and have such a wide interest but, when I'm working, I have a very specific type of music that I could work to for hours. When I first found out about Lindsey Yung, I was intrigued by this piano playing singer/songwriter. I love the fact that she plays solo and that although I would classify her as a pop artist, she also has Hawaiian influences and although I didn't see this through the video, With Every Breath, she also plays the ukulele (as shown below).
This San Diego artist whose CD will be released October 2008, on her birthday no less, can be seen within her videos and performing live in long skirts of vibrant colors. I also love that she performs in her bare feet! After two years of work, if you happen to be in the San Diego area on October 4th, you'll be able to see her perform and to get her CD as well. Lindsey is such a celebrated singer/songwriter who finds her inspiration from the beautiful landscape of Maui. Enjoy the video and hear more snippets from her Myspace page.
A few weeks ago, you were introduced to Rachael Sage here on the Kitten Lounge who I feel is a mix of She & Him, Kate Nash and some of my other favorite artists. This summer, Rachael Sage released Chandelier and one of the songs that was released was Vertigo. In the last post, I included the audio but now, we have the video! I love the carnival vibe of this video with it's catchy tune. Not only will you be able to enjoy this video but it's giveaway time! We have 2 AMAZING gift packs of Rachael Sage. From now through next Tues we are looking for your comments that will be linked to this post. Play this video and tell us what you like about this song or when you would listen to this song. To me, this is definitely something that would be perfect for me to listen to while I work in Starbucks. Leave your posts here and I will choose 2 winners next Tues who will receive:
Right before Fashion Week, I had an amazing tip about an artist that I HAD to know about. Let me just say that when I got a little clarity today, I enjoyed learning about Red Grape Records' artist Hafdis Huld. Originally from Iceland but living in the UK, she has an amazing folk, acoustic, pop sound and I love this video that is currently on You Tube called Tomoko. Hafdis is the girl that is not in the brown cat suit dancing around! I debated this point back and forth until I had a talk with Kerry and he set me straight! I have to say that I love her sound! You can also learn more about her and other songs via her Myspace account. Her sound is unique and it definitely puts you in a great mood, I'm not sure who the second person is in the brown catsuit but the video is fun to watch because of their interaction! Thank you so much Kerry for the tip/clarification and I hope you guys love this video as much as I do!
Yes we are in day two of Fashion Week but if there is one thing that you notice besides the clothes, it's the music. I will be tracking down the playlist of most of these shows as I have really enjoyed hearing it! A few days ago Girls on Film contacted me wanting to be included in this week's Sippin' Saturdays focus on indie artists! I love that this female group is all about style and is a blend of new wave, dance tracks, 80's pop. It's quite a combination and a lot of fun to listen to as well. I am sad to hear that they don't tour a lot up here but if you're in Florida, you stand a very good chance at hearing them sing! One of my favorite songs, is Distressed. Very fun song and you can click to hear a snippet. It definitely gets you moving and it iPod worthy as well. Check out the various CD's they have released and their site as well!
If you have known me since I have been out in the East Coast, you know that I began working in music and of course with those that were indie's. I have always had a passion for this and although I have spent a large time of my years here in fashion, I never lost site of that other portion of my creative side. The original Kitten Lounge that started years ago, was an Internet radio show that blended my love for music with fashion tips for 6 seasons. When I launched Kitten Lounge in the blog form, I wanted it to be a great platform for fashion, entertainment, food and so much more. Sippin Saturdays has now completed yet another element of my vision for Kitten Lounge, performing artists! Each Saturday you will find who I think is amazing on these posts with links to find out more information about them. In addition, keep your eyes on the sidebar to see which artists I have on my iPod as well so that you can add to your Kitten Playlist!
Rachael Sage released Chandelier after the success of 8 previous solo albums, on June 10th, 2008. With a fanbase that's continues to grow, I was very interested in getting introduced to her sound and vibe. Currently, Vertigo is available as a free download and I have to say that within the first bars of the song, I was hooked! Rachael Sage is an NYC artist whose newest CD is self-produced and isbilled as a mix of Torri Amos, Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles and Alanis Morissette to name a few. I have to say that she even reminded me of the She as in She and Him and also had elements of Kate Nash. I love that she is a great blend of rock, pop and folk sound that is easy on the ear; moreover, listening to her lyrics she has the ability to talk about life's bumps along the way without depressing her listeners. Take some time to check out Rachael Sage and to get acquainted with her previous albums. Sign up on her email list as well and I also suggest to look at the video for Vertigo as well! To kick off our music segments, we will have a giveaway that includes 2 Rachael Sage Gift Packs which include her current CD and also Blistering Sun in addition to a lot of other goodies. We will kick this off in the next few days - stay tuned for details.
Today if you're in NYC or simply are a huge fan of the Giants, you can enjoy Super Tuesday AND the parade of our newly crowned Giants. In that vein, I had to share one other Super Bowl commercial that I absolutely loved. It tied together one of my favorite songs (Michael Jackson's - Thriller), Naomi Campbell and of course a tasty beverage. I loved seeing the dance moves from the lizard and Naomi and it was so catchy that it defintiely became my favorite commercial of the night. All of us should think about looking this glam when we're out and about and shaking it up no matter who's around (without carrying how we may look when doing this). Take a look at this commercial from SOBE's Life Water and thanks for the person at You Tube that put this out there as I was looking for it last night!
As many of you may know, I spent my Saturday morning at the Lacoste Fashion Week Show. I have to say that I LOVED the show for many reasons. I loved the end of the show which was like a breathing ad with everyone doing their best ski bunny pose. It was definitely a dramatic way to close the show! In addition to the end of the show was the Jamaican inspired portion of the show with amazing music to match. As a whole the show was a lot of fun and since I watched the show with various members of Lacoste/Samsonite, I enjoyed tuning into the fun bags that this runway. Courtesy of Coutorture, I have the runway show for your review. For those of you that may not have been at the show, I loved the collegiate style wool bags that were given out - yes there will be a pic of this soon! Whether you get this in grey or in the maroon color, this is definitely something that will be super cute in the fall to sport around the city or wherever you happen to be.
I don't have one of these right now but it is SO on my list. My iPod and I are never far away from one another - I'm sure you guys are the same. I love coming up with my playlists and enjoy listening to it at home. A gift for myself this holiday season will by the iHome which is available at Brookstone. I love that it has a remote control so that I can sit anywhere in the room and flip just as easily through my tunes as I would if I had my iPod in my hands. I love that it can sit within the tiny speakers and not take up too much room. In addition, I'll never be without the time and it has an alarm - perfect. Oh yes, as I am beginning to pack up and think of ways to make my apartment look snazzy, this is one of the items that is definitely on my list! Get this for yourself or as a great gift for someone else!
We love hearing from you! Suggestions, ideas and thoughts are always welcome.
Please send all food related questions to Paul, spa and wellness items to Keren and all other queries to Kimmie.
