Treasure Tuesdays ~ Belle of the Ball

We all know that there are days where we expect to be wined and dined on pre set days like Valentine's Day, Anniversaries and more. But it's so much fun when you're randomly doing it up! Maybe it's an evening at the Met followed by an amazing dinner or a typical old New York concept of a night out for dinner followed by dancing it away in some decadent space. Regardless, you're bound to have those moments where you and your honey get wrapped up in one another and you need a dress that looks phenomenal! Today, I present an amazing look that incorporates blush, black, one of my favorite python clutches from Kotur, fab jewelry from Noir which is whimsy on your wrist and Louboutins!

Trendy Thursdays ~ Project Detox: The Meal of the Moment

In an ongoing series, Keren Weinstein, our Guest Life-Balance Editor, took a much needed trip. More than the need to go on vacation to a new locale, she wanted to find her own sense of balance and thus Project Detox began. Last week, we realized that a scent can calm us and create its own memory of peace and tranquility! Today, Keren brings us to the perfect moment with a meal.

I’m a young girl at a family function when I notice my L.A. based uncle sitting by the patio with the sun shining on his face. He is eating something from the fruit tray. By the looks of it one might think he was eating a slice of heaven. I immediately dart over.

‘Taste this Fig’ he says. Still standing I take a small bite and begin chewing. As if the faster I chew the quicker, I too, will taste.

‘Whoa. Slow it down. He tells me.

Sit down. Close your eyes.

Now take another bite.

Roll it in your mouth and let it touch the different taste buds.

Smell the experience.

Feel the texture & sensation.

Taste.’

(Wow. Was that the SAME Fig?) I recall opening my eyes & needing a moment just to snap back.

This was my first experience with Mindful Eating. I confess. Originally, I wrote it off as his ‘California’ way of eating.

And I was New York.

Fast forward to Project Detox where I am on the hunt to infuse balance into my every day life. When I see an activity called Mindful Eating I immediately sign up. The curiosity. The nostalgia. The craving for another Miraval-esque experience.

And after being gently slumber I woke up reborn. Hungry like a baby.

We sit with an appetite and an open mind in the dining room. Table set for about 20 guests. (Eating & mingling. Perfect!). Amongst us sits Junelle, the nutritionist. As she guides us through the meal with tips and teachings along the way, we quickly realize that the Only mingling was going to be with our inner selves and with the food!

We are not to talk to each other. We are to focus on the act of eating. Take a moment to notice our surroundings. The setting. The plate. The color and consistency of the food. To take a bite and feel the texture and temperature of the food in our mouths. Acknowledge the process of chewing and swallowing. The pause in between. Notice the after taste. Breathe.

It was challenging (& a bit awkward) to eat quietly in lieu of being amongst new friends but the greater the challenge the greater the reward. In no time did I learn about my personal relationship with food. About eating intuitively.

We were all shocked at how much food was left on our plates when we felt full and how delicious the experience was. The French know this. Quality over Quantity. They are thin.

It makes sense. Your brain receives a signal from the body through the central nervous system that you are hungry, eating and full. If your mind is ‘multi-tasking’ or rushing through a meal then there is no mind-body connection. You then miss the essential flavors and pleasures of the food & your digestion efficiency is decreased (and how ironic that IBS and stomach disease is on the rise). Plus, your brain may miss the messages that you are even eating - let alone full.

It may still think you are hungry. You continue eating.

No skinny jeans for you.

Our lives are in high-speed. If on-the-go we can talk, text, trade stocks, email, shop and for just about Anything…’there’s an App for that’, then you KNOW eating on-the-go must have been mastered way before that. Long ago in the U.S. eating has been defaulted as ‘another task to do on our list’. We eat meals while working at our desks, driving, watching TV, even walking.

OK, clearly we cannot eat every meal in silent focusing on the act of eating. Dinner with friends & family is Critical and there are times we simply must eat on-the-go. But between eating 3 meals and about 2 snacks per day, we have over 35 opportunities a week to attempt it. In between it all, we Can balance a sense of well-being with our high speed culture.

The picture above is my son ‘E’ at my favorite lunchtime-waterfall-escape-spot in NYC two blocks from my office. It’s important to me he learns the importance of mindful eating early on. No write offs this time.

Most cities are packed with many public parks, gardens, waterfalls, etc. and with an iPOD you can be staging moments for your meals just about anywhere. Another trick is to at least eat the first bite of every meal mindfully to set the tone. Putting your fork down in between bites really does help (thanks Junelle).

Book time on your calendar to eat mindful meals. Treat it with the importance of a business meeting or a trip to the doctor. This is time for you. A much needed break. A reconnection.

Slow down. Become aware. Chew. Pause. Savor. Enjoy.

Haven’t you heard?

Mindful eating is the meal of the moment!

Bon Appétit

Sippin Saturdays: R&B Artist Shontelle @ Veet

This past Wed, I went to M2 Lounge to attend Veets event and to hear Shontelle (on Universal Motown's label and check out her fan club, Shontelle Online to see great pics and to know where she'll be at) perform! Right before she went on, I had the opportunity to interview this Barbados beauty and to learn about her beauty regimine, style and what it would be like to envoke her favored icon. I truly enjoyed chatting with her and hearing her loves as well!

Wearable Wednesday: Great Minds Get Great Finds

So I am heading to the Dominican for vacation with Food Editor and boyfriend, Paul. I am super excited and the 5 weeks I have to wait, can't come soon enough. With that said, I want an entirely new wardrobe and of course, I still want to buy things throughout the rest of the season. Although the economy isn't that great, I love that you can get great deals. But a deal is truly best when it lasts!

When I first came to New York 6 years ago, I happened to be shopping with my mom for a trip I was taking to Florida. I needed a Little Black Dress as I was going to a wedding. I found the perfect LBD that was classy and yet, had little cut outs in the back. You can see this dress on the right side toolbar within my group of Flickr pictures. I wore this recently at a New Years event at the Rainbow Room. That was the best $39 dollars spent and it is my go to dress and travels well too!

So that brings us to the present! This dress was purchased at Mandee and if you don't have one in your hometown, you can get it online. Currently they are doing a 20% off promotion online if you use the word BAILOUT. I think this is a great way to add a lot of items into your wardrobe and you too may have a story about how something priced so cheaply ended up being a mainstay within your wardrobe!

Snazzy Sundays: The Staycation

The economy has been an interesting one. Yes you may have to think about doing one thing versus another; however, you have the option to do some amazing things at a cheaper price. Although you may put your vacation on hold, it doesn't mean that you don't need a change in environment. This weekend, we had the opportunity to enjoy The Dream Hotel which is a great boutique hotel that reminds me of South Beach and yet it is located on the west side! The idea of staying in the city and enjoying a great meal (we began the night within the hotel at the bar downstairs called Rm. Fifty5 went on to Ocean Grill and then Isabella's only to finish the night at the Ava Lounge) was too much to pass up. For the next few weeks, you can enjoy a night here (on the weekends) for as low as $240! We ended up getting a room that was a suite and had a view of Times Square! I love the hues and the flourescent settings as well!

Although I'm all about various portions of the city, this side of town is not one that I tend to hang out in! So it was nice to pick a series of restaurants and lounges that were in the area. We felt so relaxed (the beds at Dream are like sleeping on clouds and with the all white interiors, I felt like I had been at a spa for weeks). Regardless of where you are, it's important to know that you still need to take time out for you and to realize that you can have an amazing time while being witihn your own city! It's like seeing where you live with new eyes. To this end, Kitten Lounge will cover various hotels that you can attend and what great places are in the area.

Sippin Saturdays: A Lacoste Send Off

This week has been absolutely crazy and hello, we're only into the first full week of Jan and yet we're almost midway the month! This week was a crazy week and interestingly enough, it's just getting started! For those of you that don't know, not only do I run this site, design jewelry and work in Social Media, but I am also the Assistant to the Sr VP at Lacoste! So it definitely has me running in a million directions and I love it. What  I love about insane times is the fact that every now and then you have the opportunity to enjoy it! This week, our Chairman, Bob Siegel had an amazing party as we kicked off the new year and also wished him well with his new retirement. He is a man that I will miss without a doubt and yet, I have to say that my life has definitely been enriched by knowing him and just seeing his amazing energy - I truly believe that there are a few people that you meet in this life that leave an indelible mark and he is one of them. He has taught me a lot but if anything one thing he has shown me is if you love what you do, you can do it forever. To be in your 70's, active, vibrant and more - AMAZING and something to aspire to. All tribute aside (as I could go on forever), there was a point!

As we danced, drank and nibbled at the Rainbow Room last Wed, I got to share so much fun with great friends that I have met while I have been there from those that are in my office to those in the field! So this weekend is all about resting as we hit our Fall Market so enjoy some pics!!

Wearable Wednesdays: You Know I Love Michael Kors For Spring

You know that one of my favorite shows during Fashion Week was the Michael Kors show! I loved sitting 3rd row seeing a crisp show with vibrant colors and if you have read previous posts you know that I am definitely a huge fan of his classic American style. With the cold temperatures that have hit New York, I am already planning my super vacation in March! These pieces from his collection are amazing items from their cut to their color! My favorite look is the tunic which is perfect to pair with swimwear or even a pair of jeans or linen pants. It definitely works within a number of looks! he second favorite look are the dresses which are perfect for cocktail parties, the Hamptons or anywhere where you can have a perfect evening with the beach at your doorstep! Take some time to check out his fab looks and you can't forget to check out the tote!

Wearable Wednesdays: New Years Part I

So today is a bit strange with all the snow and looking out the window here in Long Beach, I am a bit concerned as we will soon make our way into the city!  What I love best about this day is that regardless of the plans, you never know where the night will take you! We have plans of going to Capitale (our initial plans seemed to have fizzled but I'm going with the flow) and then of course we will ring in the new year! I can't wait to kick off Kitten Lounge on Jan 5th with increased coverage on some topics and then those that are completely new for this site but yet will be loved by all of you! Happy New Year and see you in 2009!

Mingling Mondays: When The Ball Drops in NYC

When the ball drops in NYC, where will you be? Well for starters, the Kitten Lounge team will be at Gustavino's which is a fab facility with arched ceilings which are perfect to party in and with it being on 59th street, the drive in will be perfect! But there are a number of places that you should consider and so, here are 5 fab places that you may want to consider and of course you;ll want to get your group together and buy your tickets at Joonbug in order to make sure you can be together and ring in 2009 which is bound to be an amazing year!

1. Gustavino's - Our Food Editor loves high ceilings and interesting places, so it was a no brainer that the team should ring in the new year here as it is centrally located! I am psyched about the open bar, passed appetizers and more. I love dressing up and going to an area of town that I typically do not party in!

2. Duvet II - I have always loved partying here! I love the beds and how relaxed it is so I think that this is definitely a place to consider. Of course if you're going to be here, make sure that you reserve a bed as it adds to the luxury!

3. One - When it comes to one of my favorite places in the Meat Packing District, One is in my top 3! With that being said, this is definitely a place to go to for New Years Eve as I love the intimate vibe while also having enough space to flow from one room to the other! This is an essential when you're going to hang out at a place for awhile, a change of pace is always appreciated!

4. Amalia - The Dream Hotel is one of my favorite places. It has my favorite rooftop - Ava Lounge! I love that it has an amazing view of Times Square and yet you're a bit removed. I say that to say that the restaurant, Amalia is downstairs and is gorgeous! I love that it has a Louis the XVI vibe to it and everywhere you look, there is a feast for the eyes! In addition, selecting this party allows you to have a double combo with D'or.

5. Aspen - My final pick is for the group that wants to have a bit of nature while being inside! I have always been a fan of Aspen (always been so Freeman's like). I love that this is definitely a place to see and be seen! The Flatiron District is always a great place to hang out and is centrally located to wherever the night will take you afterwards.

So these are my top 5 faves and of course, you'll know where I will be! But there are plenty of parties to enjoy out there and you can search Joonbug as you plan one of the most important nights of the year! I will keep you up to date on what's going on over the next few days and will let you know of various parties in NYC and our sister city Toronto will be in the next post (I have to say that with it being a fashion capital, I had to show some love to them as well! If I wasn't here, I would be in Toronto ringing in the new year!).

Wearable Wednesdays: Think About Your Gifting With Vogue!

If you need ideas for gifting, make sure that you think about Jennifer Creel, a New York Socialite who shares some of her ideas with Vogue.TV! I love the fact that you may be able to get items that you had questions about as many times we send gifts to those that we may not know as well but would like to let them know that we're thinking of them! Whatever your reason, check them out!

Sippin' Saturdays: NYFW SS2009 ~ Carmen Marc Valvo

So Fashion Week is over and yesterday I had an AMAZING birthday and of course there will be recaps and I have another show that I attended last night as well. The Carmen Marc Valvo show was a beautiful show and reminded me of everything that I enjoy about fashion! I love seeing a show where you love every single piece that hits the runway and it's a shame that I can't include every piece but these were my ABSOLUTE faves from this show! I love a great evening gown and the attention to detail that is applied!

Treasure Tuesdays: NYFW SS2009 ~ Michael Kors

I enjoy watching Project Runway and hearing Michael Kors' thoughts and I have to say that one of my favorite judging moments came when his mom sat next to him adding in her two scents as well! Well it was with much anticipation that I attended Michael Kors' show and I will say that he definitely showed a lot of primary colors from the 60's. I do love the hats and here are some of the best looks from the runway with an image of the man himself!

Mingling Mondays: NYFW SS2009 ~ Kimmie on WNBC

We are at Day 4 of Fashion Week. I write this now as I am going to bed soon so that I can be ready for one of my most hectic days at the show. There are so many exciting shows that i can't wait to share with you AND Friday I turn 29 - so there is a lot to be done. In addition, the Pink Lounge just opened so please check it out as it keeps you connected to all those that have products and services that benefit the awareness of Breast Cancer! This will run from today through Nov 15th! In other news WNBC, the local NYC affiliate, is not only only covering Fashion Week but is also showcasing bloggers such as myself that are Fashion Bloggers On the Move - I have this image which is a print screen but you can check out other bloggers as well (many of them who I keep bumping into at the shows) and if you're on Twitter (username: CocoaBebe)say "hi" as I love building more followers and chatting with you! Fashionable Fridays: NYFW SS2009 ~ Rosa Cha

I saw my favorite show so far - Rosa Cha. As many of you know, I am a huge fan of the line and if I could, I would wear bathing suits everyday without a doubt. I love that the Goodie Bags had Haviannas in them (I will be swimming in them by the end of the show) and I love the fact that there were steel drums playing prior to the start of the show. I was so pleased to attend this how as Chanel Iman was in the show and totally rocked her kaftan. For an accessory designer or anyone that enjoys accessories, I was delighted to see cuffs, rings, earrings and so much more. The pallette of the swimsuits stayed within the Opal White, Red, Green and Leaden Brown shades. Enjoy the gallery and will someone book me a trip to Brazil after seeing that amazing

Mingling Mondays ~ Enjoy the Outdoors Even For a Moment

Even though it's NYC, I love that you can take a moment to leave your offices and go to a hidden park or even on 53rd and Madison to enjoy Hello Kitty and her friend Merry Melody as fountains. The summer may end soon but you can always take a breather and find a place to grab some nibbles and to take a breather!

Fashionable Fridays ~ Can't Wait for the Webisodes of "On the Plus Side"

On past Fashionable Fridays I have shared interesting editorials, cute outfits that I considered to be a must and how it would look amazing with denim and anything else you can get your hands on. But as of this week, something amazing has taken place and in my mind’s eye, this is as big as many of the industries that continue to bubble at the service within the fashion industry. Right now we talk about two issues, that we want our models to reflect real people in the sense that they should look healthy and not as if they are seconds from fainting. In addition, our models should also reflect us as a people – coming in a variety of hues and that there should be an increased goal to ensure that our runways give everyone an opportunity to show how garments look. The runways promoting positive health and also promoting the very awareness that Italian Vogue did in their ground breaking issue of showing various black models. I commend anyone that can be the first or be apart of any movement that aims to change the face of how we see everything around us. Although I have made strides to change something whether it is within the industry or not, I have not placed myself on a platform that says, “here I am, recognize me as I am apart of this team”.

Sarah Conley, Coutorture Community Manager, Style IT Editor, make up artist and my friend who has helped me learn much more about social media and just what it means to be connected even when you don’t see each other everyday (yet you share the same city) – is on this platform. This Fashion Week as I become excited in not only attending the shows but sharing it with you, I felt the need to focus on the preparation and what it’s like to be there in one of fashion’s greatest tests of endurance. Sarah aims to launch the ground breaking webisodes of "On the Plus Side: A Fuller Figured Fashion Week", a documentary on what it means to be a plus size woman covering New York Fashion Week. To know Sarah is to know someone that is so vibrant and passionate about what she does that you are also engaged in what she is working on as well. This is someone who has style and so much so that many of the clothing companies: NARS, Old Navy, B & Lu, Lane Bryant, Silhouettes and Kathryn Kerrigan are assisting her so she can inspire other plus sized women to embrace their inner style and to be comfortable in their own skin.

With this big step and with so many people supporting Sarah within the blogosphere (Girl Woman Beauty Brains) and in PR (PR Couture), I felt that it was necessary to show my support for my friend. I am not only supporting her by creating an exclusive lariat necklace from my line, Kitten Couture for Sarah. This necklace will be named Lola (pictured below and is constructed of Mother of Pearl, Green Chips and vibrant Red Coral), and a percentage of the proceeds will be given to an organizations that encourages young girls to strive for their goals as they continue to gain a strong sense of self.

But as she covers NYFW and explores "On the Plus Side", we will also play her videos here as well to keep you in the loop! I have had the honor of hearing this from a plan to seeing it morph into an amazing plan. Although Sarah's focus is on representing a positive statement on being a plus sized woman and participating in NYFW, I can't help thinking that this is also a cry for all of us to enjoy who we are no matter our size, height, appearance etc! Stay tuned and also stay tuned to the sites mentioned within this post who will also be covering this. If you are a company that is interested in assisting Sarah, then please reach out so that you can be apart of this event as well!

Treasure Tuesdays: Make it Work

Sometimes I get up with a look that I want to wear and somehow between running out of the shower and looking in my closet, the outfits don't always seem to translate as well as they seemed in my mind. Sometimes that super snazzy outfit that had that great pop factor, can be replaced by much simpler pieces that allow the accessories to totally carry the outfit. I love the fact that I can wear a cute tank, t-shirt or tunic with a pair of denim of varying washes and looks. It is important to know what accessories are an essential so that you never have to wonder what looks best when you head out of the house. What are the basic pieces? Check out our spread! You can definitely bet that I will use these tips while I am at the tents and reporting to you guys about the amazing designers hitting the runways of Fashion Week! You'll want to check in for the coverage right here and to check out my daily post: Kimmie On Style. From Sept 5th - Sept 12th, I will rock a different look that is accessory heavy! I can't wait to reveal the final day of Fashion Week's outfit which also happens to be my birthday as well. On these posts you'll see who the designers are and how I chose to wear them and of course, I'll let you know where you can get it as well!

Mingling Mondays ~ Spread Your Cupcake Love

We all have our favorite cupcakes but we need to be mindful that there are so many tasty ones to try that we should at least keep our options open! I have to say that I am a Buttercup Bake Shop girl but I have some other favorites that are worth taking a look at! This is a great way to grab your friends and to head out to some tasty places that you may have never visited or to try a new cupcake.

Mingling Mondays ~ Take a Walk

Nycwalk So this weekend was one of those gorgeous times where you wanted to do everything outside! Even when the sun went down, you still felt the need to enjoy every last little drop. My boyfriend and I took a lot of walks (except for yesterday because I wasn't dressed for the chilly temperatures). But it got me to thinking that a great way to have a great time with your sig other, friends, etc is to take a walk around the city. I used to say that wherever you go in the city it's like stepping into a completely different area. Wlthough you may not have available funds or the time for a vacation, being in the city is like a mini one. So when I found a site that looks at the 2 year quest of a man who walked every street in NYC - I was impressed. New York City Walk follows the journey of a man via pics - pics that you may recognize and those that you may not. Although most of us will not do this, I think it is a great idea to say - this weekend we are going to head to the Village, browse some shops, have a few snacks/drinks and then grab dinner. It's a great way to learn more about the city and also a great way to spend time with someone else as well.
