Trendy Thursdays: Beach Beauty

Maybe because I'm traveling a lot, stores have been rocking spring and summer floorsets or the out of office messages of my business partners that have me in a beach state of mind! Whatever the reason is, I had to share some of my must have items that will make you look beach ready, are perfect for everyday use or when you want to grab a bag to head out to stay with friends. Roll over images to see why Ole Henriksen, C Booth, Neutrogena, GlamGlow, Organix and Dove are on my list!

ACCESSORIES INSPIRATION

What's a beach day or a trip without a fun bag? I'm obsessed with First World Trash is a fab line of accessories which recycles billboards, seatbelts and other items that would go into landfills - and finds their way into a number of amazing pieces (cosmetic bags, wine coolers, etc). Made in Queens NY, Jenelle Malbrough assembles these items into wearable art! Last week when I was traveling to Charleston, I loved carrying my beach tote (pictured above) as my carry on!

Trendy Thursdays: On the Runway to NYFW ~ Skincare Prep

With NYFW starting in a little over 2 weeks, this is about the time I begin to do a beauty prep. Truth be told, I do some version of a beauty prep anytime I know there is a TV segment coming up or that I will have a series of days where I will be out and about including photoshoots, client lunches and more! Fashion Week is a little over a week of attending runway shows, after parties, presentations, meeting up with those that are in town and even booking work whether it's a campaign or something interesting to throw in my routine. I feel that being prepped is not just about what you want in general but also that you're face forward. Feb Fashion Week is always a challenge as the weather is a bit different and your face may be going through seasonal changes. So stay a step ahead with pampering it prior to the day before!

These items are great ways to prep, to use during the big week (or any week you're focusing on) and a great way to ensure beauty longevity! My quick tip that I highly suggest if you're not going to a manicure at your favorite salon whether you're spot is backed up or you're en route and had no time - Sally Hansen's Gel Manicure Set comes with everything you need to ensure that your polish will stay put for up to 2 weeks! This way you don't have to worry about chips and you have a fabulous shine. The lamp, all necessary coats, cleansing pads, files and removers are included! This is a great way to stay ahead. You can also opt for the Sally Hansen Gel Strips as well which has its own set and is a matter of preference in terms of use!

In addition to your regular cleanser, I like to exfoliate or do a mask 1 - 2 times a week, Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask with Clary Sage. This is something that you can do from now to NYFW as well as during and after. This is a great way to hydrate as well as to bring a fabulous glow to your face. If you're opting out of adding this to your weekly routine, I have some other items that are perfect. Dior One Essential Capture Totale Serum (which you know I am obsessed with their foundation as well as a number of their skincare products) is the perfect way to look refreshed. I love using this in the day time after cleansing my face. This serum doesn't feel tight on your face and feels more like a moisturizer (although normally I still do add a moisturizer after using this but from time to time I have skipped it). My moisturizer that I enjoy and works no matter the season or the locale, is Clinique Moisture Surge Intense which hydrates as well as feels super light on your face. I always like to wait about 5 minutes before I put makeup on; however, I find that you can directly apply makeup and look completely natural.

I have 2 secret powers that are phenomenal. During NYFW in Sept, I stopped by the Artistry Media Lounge and learned about their Intensive 14 Night Restore Program. This is to be a 2 week program, one vial per day which would be used on your face (if there's still some left, use on your neck as well as across your décolletage). Within the next two days, I will use this and since it's a leave in treatment, I can go straight to bed and allow this to work its magic. Once I'm done, I still have a few days between the end of using this program and the beginning of Fashion Week so that my skin can rest (I'm a big believer in this although this is not necessary).

Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip is the perfect way to prep your lips to looking the way we want them too! I have been using this since Christmas and I love how it feels on my lips as it is a balm but I find that it heals your lips especially when you're in the chilly NYC temperatures and is great for a base for your lipgloss as it already has a high shine to it!

When using all of these items together, your taking every step to making your face look red carpet, front row and picture ready!

Trendy Thursdays ~ Hair Travel

I travel a lot and many times, when I land, by the time I get through customs, the airport etc I am scheduled to be somewhere with just a smidge of time to get in my room, unpack everything to perfection, hop into the shower and to get out of my travel clothes. I need my go to looks no matter what and to ensure that I look fab. Just like I have go to outfits, I love go to items that allow me to quickly get through getting ready while having many of the items that I use at home. Hair is much more then prepping it when you're about to head out the door. It's one of those items that you have to infuse (whatever your treatment routine is). I have to say that I love Ted Gibson as he has a phenom system of products that you can use whether you have been to his salon or haven't. I'm a huge fan of his shampoos which are perfect for whatever color you're rocking as there is one that is available for red heads, brunettes and blondes! In this particular Ted Gibson Travel Essential Kit, this is for the jetsetter who wants to ensure that the care you receive at home continues when you're out and about to wherever your destination will take you! It includes 2 oz travel sizes (TSA friendly) of daily cleanse ®, daily nourish®, beautiful hold® and 3 hairsheet styling® sheets. In addition to this kit, I'm loving that I recently became introduced to Shea Butter Curl Oils by Alaffia which is available in various textures and scents - this is perfect for those that rock waves and curls! Regardless of your texture, these oils hydrate and soften strands, strengthen hair and fight split ends, adds shine, improves scalp health and there are no harsh or heavy ingredients. This multipurpose solution allows you to put it directly on hair whether it is wet or dry and then you can also use it as a scalp conditioner which is always nice to do to ensure the health of your hair. Fine Hair can enjoy Shea Butter & Rosemary Shining Curl Oil, Thick Dry or Coarse Hair can use Shea Butter & Coconut Hydrating Curl Oil and Baby Curls/Chemically Treated Hair can have Shea Butter & Neem Nourishing Curl Oil.

In addition to nurturing your hair, like any look, hair loves to be accessorized. The trend over the past few seasons within 2011 has been a mix of boho chic style which allows hair to be loose and just do its own thing; however, ensuring that your hair is pulled away from your face whether it's a clip or ponytail is important too! I love the feather trend as it's an unexpected pop of something. I also love Dauphines of New York's the One Headband which can be worn with your hair down Grecian style or pulled back to allow that bun to have a new life! Whatever you do, your hair is the highlight and one of the first things that your eyes are drawn to - so definitely ensure that you have what you need.

Trendy Thursdays: Beam Take 2

On a chilly and  windy day this past Sunday I was off to Beam Laser Spa (1841 Broadway Suite 806) to get my second treatment! I have enjoyed a hairless existence under my arms since Oct! The idea of never having to shave again has also made me think of other areas that I may consider as well. As always Lisa and Andrea (the amazing sister duo) make the experience even better by chatting with you about life in general and also how it's been since your last treatment as well. Just as they said during my first treatment, within three weeks, the little hairs that were there just fell away and for my experience - the hairs didn't really grow back. Those that did were much finer.

After our chatting, I went into the room with Andrea. On my first treatment, Andrea described what it was that I would feel and explained the process of what she was doing. She educated me on the two types of lasers available the Alexandrite and the Yag (the Yag is for those that have an olive skin tone and darker) and what to expect in terms of after the treatment. Although I am a complete convert to the laser treatment, she explained the waves and what to expect after my treatment. The first time it took about 10 mins and this time, the treatment felt like 5 mins! In addition, when I left the first time, I felt a slight feeling of irritation as my arms had experienced a laser but within about two hours it was fine! Andrea suggested that I use Aloe and I bought a Cocoa Bean Aloe which was perfect. Coming into the treatment, I had meant to bring this with me and forgot.

After this treatment, we went back into the waiting room and I chatted for about 15 mins with them. It wasn't until I got into the elevator that I realized I didn't feel anything! My underarms are smooth and I never have to spend time shaving which is amazing. Generally, their packages are for 6 treatments and I have my next one on Dec 20th! In terms of a gift that you should give yourself, this is definitely one that I would suggest. The time that is saved and the piece of mind  that you never have to wonder about a shadow is worth it! I'll let you know more about this in my next post about Beam and if you want to hear about the first step in my hairless journey, visit Beam Brings You Into the Daylight. If you're interested in trying this out, get a package (6 sessions) and receive 25% off from now through Dec 31st, 2008. Just visit their website and give them a call!

Sippin Saturdays: Lunch With A.W. Gryphon

Fashionable Fridays are always about amazing fashions and people and I am so excited to share a great interview that I had earlier this month. At the beginning of the month, I tweaked your interest with a post about an interesting novel that recently came out and I let you know that throughout Oct, you would get to know more about it! Last week, during Thursday's Beauty Segment we presented various beauty treatments/rituals that appear within the pages of A.W. Gryphon's novel, Blood Moon; moreover; she generated this list.

Today's post brings tidbits of the novel while also learning about the author as well. Blood Moon is a novel that not only looks at the typical theme of good and evil but presents a well researched look on what happens through time and how many choices and decisions may not be of your own free will. In Amelia, the main character, we are also presented with the age old question of nature versus nurture and which one plays out. More importantly, this book doesn't focus on the choices made but creates an understanding of how events can come into play to allow someone to go in one direction versus another. As an outside observer, we are able to see how the individual people and events are very intricate puzzle and at the conclusion of this novel which is apart of a three book series, you find yourself pleased to be apart of the journey while being as conflicted as Amelia herself.

In addition to this, this story is very October appropriate whether you are focused on Halloween or Harvest principles. This story looks and follows various historic times in history in terms of Witches and Wiccans. While this theme plays on, we can also appreciate the very modern world that Amelia lives in which includes Chanel, the need to infuse beauty regimines within daily life, a love of art and as we leave her native San Francisco, we are also pleased to embrace London where most of the story takes place. This book was so compelling that it was extremely difficult to tear myself away and as I closed the last page, I wished that it was next Spring when the next chapter is slated to arrive. In addition, Gryphon took great care to think about the names of each character and to ensure that everyone matched what their personalities were meant to be.

Without giving too much away, I was left with so many questions - why was this topic chosen, what am I supposed to come away with in reading this book and most importantly who is A.W. Gryphon. One of the things that I am very appreciative of is the open dialogue between myself, Ms Gryphon and her assistant! We shared so many ideas in terms of how I wanted to introduce her to all of you and I loved that she was very hands on! So it was all of this goodwill and excitement that I took with me as I entered Saks on a Sun to have a lunch session with the author herself. In addition, As I left the chocolate cafe, passed through the amazing 8th floor of shoes and met Gryphon in the actual cafe we were supposed to meet, I realized that various nonverbal clues were telling me a lot about her!

I loved that she had already begun to shop for shoes and that I loved the handbag that she carried, as someone who is a huge fan of accessories - I am always on the lookout for this. I also love that she had an amazingly simple and yet fashionable outfit. Decked out in James Perse, with her hair pulled up, I knew that she was everything like the person who I emailed weeks earlier and she had an ease of character that flows through the book compelling you to continue reading.

During lunch, I asked Allison how she became inspired to write this book! Surprisingly, I found out that she is not a practicing witch or Wiccan; however, she researched it so well that I had assumed that she was. In addition, this book reflects bits of her own footprints in that she grew up in San Francisco and loved the idea of strong women (which you will find in the book) and was introduced to various religions which created an interest in general. She also loves London which is why it became the backdrop of the novel and is why art was such an importance in the book as well.

Interestingly enough, this novel does not depict the witch in terms of the expected "hocus pocus", rather it creates a quick historical education of the celtic Druid tradition. There is a focus on the strength of women and their importance in the cycle of life. More importantly, Amelia is a character that we can identify with that has the same ups and downs that women have.

When reading this novel it is completely cinematic and I began to wonder who would star in this movie. Interestingly enough, we both agreed that one of the characters, Jeremy who plays a significant role in Amelia's upbringing - we equally loved the idea of Jeremy Irons or Anthony Hopkins to play the part. Gryphon's wishlist also include a young Cate Blanchett to play Amelia. Finally, Dorian who is a central figure in the opposing group of witches could be a David Bowie - hands down. I hope to see this book as a movie and to see who the actual characters would be.

What intrigued me about this book is learning about Gryphon herself! I llove the fact that she is an accomplished screenwriter (we will cover her films later this month), she created a novel simply from an interest and research. Finally, her sense in giving back to various charities is also important. We are both involved in Surfrider's Organization as we believe in clean waters that we can all enjoy, she believes in the Shambala Preserve which is run by Tippi Hedren and strives to be a safe haven for big cats that have been mistreated and she is also apart of the Entertainment Industry Foundation which supports various causes as Breast Cancer. I love someone who believes in various causes and follows their passions as well. Make sure that you take a moment to visit Blood Moon's website; moreover, it is available on Barnes & Noble and Amazon!
